I grew up in by far the most beautiful village in Leics, Billesdon, on the A47 to Rutland. How I miss it! So many fantastic memories and nostalgic pangs, I'll have to return to live at some point. Does anybody know the Queenshead pub or go to the primary school in the seventies? A suggestion: please try to show more before and after photos of Leices villages and current photos and latest news of Leicester. I never get time to go back, and I have no family in Leicester anymore. It'd be great to see something on the Billesdon area. (Gaulby, Skeffigton, Frisby, Rolleston, etc.). In closing, super website, and best of luck with it and of course, up the Foxes ! (and Tigers).

I probably don't properly qualify as an ex-pat, I'm a Yank who was stationed at RAF Bruntingthorpe during 1960-'62 period. My wife (from Ipswich, Suffolk), three kids, and I lived in Birstall. I was the station manager of the base Armed Forces Radio Service, and as such made many visits to DeMontfort Hall to do interviews for rebroadcast. I was also a member of the flying group at Leicester East airport, and received my "PPL" (Private Pilot Licence) while there. I would be happy to chat with anyone who might like to talk about those times, and/or the RAF station.
Added by E-mail:
Thanks for the use of your web site, there are a number of old friends and acquaintances with whom I would like to reestablish connections. Glen Hills, I must admit, doesn't ring any bells, but Blaby certainly does. I did a lot of driving around the countryside while I was there [Bruntingthorpe]. The "small" part of the world is that I was stationed at Sculthorpe [Norfolk] in 1959 and lived in a couple of places: Houghton St. Giles, near Fakenham, and Docking, not far from Hunstanton. I was there a year, and was offered a transfer to Bruntingthorpe to head up the electronics shop. That's how we happened to move to Wanlip Avenue, Birstall. We left the U.K. in September of '62. My first trip to England was in '54, and I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters, near Ipswich. I met and married my wife, Margaret there and we're still at it. I mentioned in my diary entry that I was the station manager of the AFRS station on base. AFRS was not allowed to broadcast radio energy for music, etc. (good old BBC), so I built a station using an old, large audio amplifier, and wired up almost everybody on base, and equipped them each with a speaker. Additionally, I built a remote-broadcast unit and we used to -- guess what -- broadcast basketball games from the gym. We called it AFRB (Armed Forces Radio Bruntingthorpe). Now for Sheringham. My wife went to school at Cromer, and lived in Aylsham when she was a kid. We went to Sheringham often while we were at Sculthorpe, on our way to Cromer. She has a brother who still lives in the tiny village of Buxton, in Norfolk. I was just wondering if the base you visited in Suffolk was Bentwaters. It was the biggest base in Suffolk at that time (along with Woodbridge). I left the Air Force in '65, after 13 years, and took a job in Houston. One of the customers I worked with and visited in '77, while working for the Hydril company (an energy-related company that designed and built electronic control systems for pipelines) was Shell Oil.in [your city] Calgary. I subsequently finished up my military career with the Texas Air National Guard, and put in a total of 24 years. I'm retired now, both from the military, and my civilian job. I live in Bellville, Texas now, about 65 miles NW of Houston. Still do some flying.

I left Leicester in November 1974. I left Wyggeston Boys school in 1951 and worked for an accountant EW King and Son in Halford St for 2 years. I did my national service with the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, working in the pay office at Glen Parva Barracks. When I came out of the army I worked for Thomas and Evans, Ellis Chemical, Dust Control Equipment and finally The Midland Red Bus Company at South Wigston. I am over for a holiday in Leicester from August 27 to October 15, and I would be very pleased to meet anyone who remembers me. I am particularly interested in locating a girl/woman that I used to work with at Dust Control Equipment. Before she was married her name was Irene Adams and she used to live as far as I know at 56 Gervas Road; which is off Goodwood Road. I lost touch with her in 1989 unfortunately, only managing to speak with her briefly on the phone. If anyone can shed any light on where she is living at this time I would appreciate it very much. My email address is [email protected] and I am looking forward to seeing Leicester again, as always. I have had 4 wonderful holidays there previously and once I get there I am really satisfied to be home again and never wish to travel anywhere else. My regards to all Leicester Expats and may God go with you all where ever you are. Charlie Smith.

One word, thanks. I just love your site, having had a lot of response. I even had an email from a 75 year old war bride that I remembered when I was only 6 years old. She went to Clark's College with my aunt, who is also a war bride and lives in Fitzgerald, Georgia U.S.A. I particularly like the nostalgia page with the trains and can remember sitting at the 'Spy and Cop' in Wigston for many hours. My school friend and I held our little red train spotters book in hand and steadfastly marked off all the numbers as the old steam trains went by. You really have taken me down memory lane. My mother worked at the B.U. for years and one lady has mentioned that she had also worked there. I would like to contribute a short story sometime. I joined the Army from the recruiting office on London Road at the age of 15 1/2 and went to the Army Apprentice School in Arborfield in 1955. Have some anecdotes that you may like to print. It's late her now and my visitors ( Son, Wife and grandson are getting ready for bed) will be in touch. Can't express my appreciation for your web page enough.

I stumbled upon this site while looking for what [the GWR engine] Pendennis Castle is up to. Anyone know of any books, photos, etc. of the Belgrave Road railway line (The Holiday Line), especially through Thurnby & Scraptoft station?
Added By E-mail:
I moved to Bushby in 1950 (I think) and from there to Scraptoft in 1955. I moved over to Wales in 1965, then from 1968 to 1998 lived in various parts of Hertfordshire. I now live in Winchcombe, in the Cotswolds, though since November I have been working in Amsterdam. There - potted history! I used to train spot, and spent many an hour at Thurnby & Scraptoft station, either in the evenings waiting for the one and only freight, or on summer weekends & bank hols watching the seaside specials! I even traveled on them to Skeggy & Hunstanton. So, I've kept an eye open on the railway press, but never found more than an occasional photo. My second pursuit was concerned with ale! I worked at Midland Clubs brewery in Leicester for one summer. I still recall exploring the Leicester Brewing & Malting premises, too, though they had been standing empty for a long while. And who was that chap who brewed his own - somewhere down the Belgrave road area. Tom Hoskins, that's it! Oh, you've set me on a nostalgia trip now!
I am not sure if I qualify as an ex-pat, if I still reside in UK, do I? I hope to end this work in Amsterdam in September, because I don't like leaving my cottage empty and unattended during the week. Born in Nottinghamshire in 1947; Moved to Newstead Cottage, Bushby, Leics in summer of 1950. Started Thurnby C of E school in 1952. Moved to Scraptoft village in 1955. Remained at Thurnby C of E school until 1958, when I started Guthlaxton, at Wigston Magna. Finished "Gutho" in 1965 and went to Aberystwyth. Between 1968 and 1998 I bounced around inside the borders of Hertfordshire (Hatfield, Walkern, Stevenage, Broxbourne, Baldock). Moved to Hydaway Cottage in 1998. I used to cycle all over the Midlands in search of trains & Midland Red buses, between 1958 and 1965. Yes, Nuneaton & Rugby were frequently visited. I'd go by train to Birmingham & Wolverhampton to see Great Western locos. Leicester Central sometimes had something on shed (Flying Scotsman was there briefly, and the gas turbine GT3). Now, I am a director of Cotswold Steam Preservation Ltd, and active in restoring ex-GWR freight loco no. 2807 back to serviceable condition on the Gloucester Warwickshire Railway.

I just got an e-mail from my daughter who lives in Washington State. I am from Leicester, went to the Newarke Girls School and would like to hear from some of the girls who attended there. I am an old one, 73 and do keep in touch with a few of the old girls. I am a war bride, met my husband during the war and came to the USA in 1946. He was in the USAF and he was stationed in England for seven years so my family know Leicester quite well. My father was the church organist at Fosse Rd Methodist Church. If you can find me someone who has gone to the Newarkes I would like to hear from them. My friends do not have computers so I can't e-mail them.

Searching for my sister's old school friend. Jennifer (nee Morris) Powell is hoping to contact her friend Lorraine Clay, they were school mates before we emigrated to NZ in 1972. They lived on Saffron Lane. My sister was born in 1959 so Lorraine would be of a similar age. Thanks.

First school I remember was Knighton Fields Junior - with teachers Big Miss Harris and Little Miss Harris (you can guess at why they were named that way!), then to Oadby area to Gartree, then went to a newly opened school-Manor High School (oh those crimplene dresses!), then Beauchamp Upper School, then emigrated to NZ from Uplands Rd Oadby in September 1972 (after sitting O-Levels). Friends names that I remember from as far back as Knighton Fields are Shirley Matthews, Terence (or was it Mark) Williams, Martin Tranter, Ashley Buckley, Gillian Laywood. Then from Oadby there was Elaine Middleton (still in contact), Cathy Topham, Angela Sturgess, Sarah Bennett, Diane Snowden, Susan Cross, Susan Marris, Noelle Gordon? I'll have to speak to my brothers about the boys, they'll have to dredge up all the taunting, teasing songs they used to sing at me! There were four of us kids in our family (Morris ) and all redheads (still are!) so we were noticeable. I was the eldest, then Julie, then there was Tez, then Jenny and the baby was John.

Just a line to tell you how grateful I am for "connecting" me, through your Leicester Ex-Pats site, to "new" friends. I am in e-mail touch with several now - including one who lives here in Washington state! It is almost as good as going home to correspond and reminisce with them (Sept 17, 2000).

At last, a site worth visiting Again & Again. I grew up in Hugglescote, near Coalville. Went to Newbridge and Coalville upper schools. Joined the Army in 1976 (16 years old) and never came back. (It was the army or the pits and I don't look good in black.) I'm currently trying to create a little bit of England in the boondocks. The locals love English beer (if anyone from 'Bass' reads this you are missing out on a great market). Now for a commercial break: The Philippines is not Manila (nor is it Mindanoa). Just as Leicestershire is not Leicester (or Northern Ireland). North Luzon has great beaches, great food, great hotels and really great people. Come and visit!!! Hearing "ay up mi duck" in a phillipino accent is worth the trip by itself. Although my home is now in Laoag, I'm currently working in Malaysia building bridges (in more ways than one). Please keep up the really quite brilliant site for the benefit of all the exiles.

Well Tim, you did a great job remembering all the places us kids use to play. I have spent most of the morning ploughing through your site. Many memories have been unfolded for me, especially the trips down Peewit Hollow and the trains thundering past. I particularly remember the pennies being put on the train line to be mushed by the next train coming along. A great site and one that I am glad to say I was given the opportunity of viewing. I have many things I would like to say, but do not know how much room I have but anyway here goes. For those Ex-Pats out in the big wide world, I wish you all well. It is amazing to me how many of us have left England to find greener pastures, but still we are drawn to Leicester because our lives either started there or we past through sometime.
It would be great to hear from anyone who knew me either from school or work. I grew up at 18 Hillsborough Road, opposite Hillsborough Cresent in Glen Hills. My Mother still lives in the same house with the same gates which if any of you remember passing, are of a rabbit coming out of the magicians hat. Yes, my father was Ted Bailey the Magician. My Brother Alan who still lives in Leicester, (Lutterworth) was Bernie the Bolt on the Golden Shot, if any of you can remember that show? Anyhow, that bit of stardom lasted a while for Alan, but now he is a teacher at his old school. And yes, Tim, I remember Sue Townsend!
Editors Note: to understand Pat's references to Glen Hills, the Infant's School and the author Sue Townsend, please see the section called [My Page] and also the subsection within it called "My memories of Glen Hills School."
