Hey, what an amazing fantastic website! No, I'm NOT from Leicester. I was just browsing and somehow ended up here. I thought here's another bunch of ex-pat whingers in South Africa wishing they were "back home"! What a pleasant surprise. A mass of information. Already I wish I WAS from Leicester, (actually I'm from Southend-on-Sea 30 years ago!). I've bookmarked your site to come back to as already it is an hour later than I intended. Congratulations!

After that I spent three years in Warminster Wilts before moving to Kent and working in central London until early retirement in 1992. Website [Wartime Leicestershire] www.wartimeleicestershire.com (link before & after) is very nostalgic in that it shows the bombed house in which my wife was born (92 St Ives Road), she was more seriously injured than the caption suggests.

I have lived in The Netherlands since 1983, but my family still live in Leicester so that I return regularly to visit. Does anyone know anything about the Wyggeston Old Girls Association? Hi everyone. It's been four years that I have been living here in Runion. The island is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean some 1000 miles east of Madagascar and just to the south west of Mauritius. After trying my hand at running a toy shop I am currently teaching English to both schoolkids and adults here. Ahh school! I went to Stonehill High School from 1971 to 1974 and then to Longslade Upper School from 1974 to 1978. I then studied for my OND in Hotel and Catering at South Fields from 1978 to 1980. Working in the catering industry took me away from Birstall in 1980 after 10 very happy years. (I was born in London) My parents and sister now live in Knighton. Strictly speaking I'm not an ex-pat although I've been away from Leicester since the middle 70's. I was born in Roundhill Maternity Hospital in 1952 and lived in Skipworth Street (number 41 I think) till 1959 (I think). During that time I attended Coleman Road School and Medway Street Infant School although I can't remember much about either of them. I moved to 20 Davenport Road, in 1959 and attended Whitehall Infant and Junior School and Spencefield Secondary Modern School - leaving school at Easter in 1967 to go to work at Wadkins on Green Lane Road. After leaving Wadkins at the Christmas of 1967, I went to work for the CIS in Belgrave Gate, leaving there in about 1972 to work for Courtaulds - but I can't remember the address of that. I then left Leicester to work in Devon (where I met my husband) and never really lived there again. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me.

I've just visited your site and was fascinated by what read. I have lived in the Glen Hills area all my life and can relate to almost everything you have detailed. I was born in 1958 and grew up with my parents and two brothers on Twickenham road. I brought a house on Grange Drive (no 27) in 1980 after marrying a local girl. In 1996 we sold up and purchased a bungalow on Hillsborough Crescent where we currently reside. My education was Rolleston, South Wigston High, Countesthorpe College(alternative to Guthlaxton opened in 1970 and finally Wigston college (apprentice motor mechanic with Hanger Motors). My two sons Nick and Adam both attended Glen Hills, South Wigston then Lutterworth (out of catchment choice). My daughter Amy followed exactly the same route as yourself. Nick(18) now attends Northampton University. Adam (15) regularly rides his Monkey Bike around Peewit Hollow (dodging the farmer) as did I in the early seventies on a 200 Tiger Cub and B.S.A. c15. I graduated to a Lambretta in the mid seventies (how sad). If I can help you in any way please ask.
(260)
A very interesting web site. I haven't had chance to visit all the site, but I will no doubt become a regular visitor. Thanks for including my site. Regards Geof Walsh, (Melton Mowbray)

I found your page from the links to Adrian Mole. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading your 'history'. I spent a fair amount of time in Leicester myself as my daughter Sara was the first 'Pandora' playing at The Phoenix Theatre there for three months. Three long months whilst my daughter lived with her chaperones. She was only just thirteen (twelve when she started rehearsals). I thought I wouldn't survive without her, but in the event it all turned out well. I got to know Sue Townsend quite well, an absolutely lovely lady (I am around the same age as her). It was all quite sad when my Leicester experience was over. What an adventurous life we all lead. Sara now lives in Marbella, Spain, has been there for the best part of seven years, and after spending three years in a children's soap for BBC television, decided an actress's life was not for her. She has lots of fond memories of her first World Premier job in Leicester though. Kind regards Carolann McGlasson.

For your Who's Who section. What about that Dexter fellow, the one who writes the Inspector Morse novels? I could be totally wrong (so don't quote me), but me Dad reckons that he taught at Wyggeston Boys school years ago. If you read his books, there is always some reference about some character coming from Leicester.
Webmaster's comment: "Colin Dexter, the creator of 'Inspector Morse,'was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire. In 1950 he went to study at Christ's College, Cambridge. Before that he undertook his National Service with the Royal Corps of Signals. He received a classics degree in 1953, and an MA five years later. In 1954 he became assistant classics master at Wyggeston School, Leicester. An appointment at Loughborough Grammar followed."

Thank you for thinking of this great site. I am American but consider myself from Leicester! My parents immigrated from Leicester in the late '50s to the US. Their names are Maurice Ison and Maureen (nee hall) Ison. They grew up around Saffron Lane and went to Linwood Lane primary school. Most of my relatives still live in and around Leicester. Dad was born in '34 and mom was born in '37. Would love to hear from anyone that might have known them. My favorite things about Leicester: Old John, the smell of the double-decker bus fumes downtown, Walker's crisps, and hearing "you alright, me duck?!"

Hi! Tim. I read my entry in the Ex-Pats Log Book for the USA; it was great to visit the site again. I guess I should add that my mum was from Yugoslavia and my dad from Poland. They came to England after the war. I was born in Cardiff Wales, in fact, my mum told me that Shirley Bassey was our neighbour . We then moved to 17 Lincoln St in Leicester near the Swain Street Bridge. I think I was about 2yrs old. At age 14 we moved to Dronfield St in the old Highfields district, which is also where Engelbert Humperdinck lived. I remember he used to sing at the local pub along with Tom Jones. I attended Medway school for kindergarten; my junior school was St. Peters on St. Peters Road. I then went to Western Park Open Air School for a while and then to Moat Girls School from 1961-1965. I believe the headmistress at that time was Miss Bennett. It seems so long ago and quite honestly I've forgotten a lot. I should also mention that my maiden name was Wilinski. I do remember one of my school mates from Moat, her name was Elaine Kenney. She lived near the school but I don't remember the street. I have received one reply from the website from a lady that went to one of my schools. It's really fun ! I love it. I enjoyed reading your family history - very interesting! I want to take this opportunity to say that you have done a terrific job on creating this Leicestershire website. Thank you. Oops! I almost forgot, I am also looking for a friend Named Diane McDonald we used to hang around together! maybe you can just stick that in there. Thanks again. [Oct 18, 2000]

Hi guys, my mum Kathleen Weedon was born in Birstall St in 1921. Her nephew, who she has just been reunited with after 79 years, was born in Barston St also in 1921. They were separated as babies, and thanks to the Salvation Army, he is visiting from Australia as I write. Would love to contact any other relatives still living - namely Flavell, Curry, Kilbourne, and of course, Weedon. Walter Weedon had 2 sons born in the early part of the last century. Mum has lived in NZ since she was adopted by her aunt at the age of 11years. Would love to hear...

I was born and brought up in Syston (the Toon family is kind of large and well known in Syston) until the age of 11, then moved to Melton Mowbray. In Syston I went to the junior school (75-78) and then one year of hell at Roundhill (1979). Then in Melton I was at the high school and the upper from 80 until 83. Spent a fruitless in a YTS (Rearsby Automotors or something similar) and then left England in 1985 at the tender age of 17, and now find myself at the age of 33 living in the middle of a desert in South Israel. Interested to know if there's any others who escaped Melton or Syston who are of similar age.

My parents still live near Thorn Lighting, just off Lanesborough Road, which is off Melton Road near the flyover. I studied at Alderman Newtons school in Glenfield and Charles Keene College from 1977 to 1984 and then went onto University at Cardiff. For the last 6 years my wife and I have been living in Switzerland, which was still close enough to home that one did not miss the UK. But we have now moved to sunny California - kind of far away!!! Be great to hear from any Leicesterites in the Bay Area.

I went to Humberstone Junior in the 60's, then on to Mundella Girls whilst residing in Chestnut Avenue, Garden City. I then went to cook for school meals, while doing my City & Guilds 147&151 (late 60's). Left Leicester with Sally & Andrew Fuller in Australia December 1980. Loved it so much, never looked back.

Hi there. I lived at 338 Knighton Lane East, Leicester. Unfortunately we left on my 12th birthday to live in Australia. That was in 1961! :-( I am happily married with three adult children and two grandchildren. My partner Colin and I own our own home (no, no mortgage!) and we are both full time university students. I attended Sir Jonathon North Girls School across the road from our house, and my grandmother lived in Heather Rd. I have no family left there anymore and still after all these years, dreadfully miss my home. I am hoping to make lots of new friends here and learn about all I have missed. Take care, Sioux.

My name was Margaret Vines. I am trying to locate people from Medway St School (1948-50), people from the first intake of Crown Hills School and anyone living in the Dronfield St area who may remember me. The Evington cinema was the local one and Spinney Hill Park was our meeting place (Oh! Happy Days). Even with a war on things seemed much simpler then.

I went to Sarson School for girls in Melton Mowbray; graduated in 1956. My maiden name was Jacqueline Roberts. I worked at Pex Socks & Stockings until 1960. My sister owns a hairdresser's shop in the Silver Arcade in Leicester named "The Stag."

What a great site this is. I have just had an e-mail from a cousin in the USA who had my page sent to her by her brother who lives in Tokyo. We haven't had contact for 40 odd years. A whole new family to send e-mails to. PS I don't know whether you have our new senior net website, it is http//:www.seniornetpakuranga.org.nz Also, I neglected to include my wife's maiden name in our particulars; it is (nee Grogan). I will also put a link on my sites for this one. Thanks a lot, Cheers Phil Collins.

I grew up in the Anstey Lane and Blackbird Rd area. Went to Mantle Rd school also to the Leicester College of Junior Arts and Crafts during the late 40's and early 50's. Loved to go to the Palais De Dance and the concerts at DeMontfort Hall. Have several old friends who came to the States but have lost touch with them. It would be great to hear from other Leicesterites.

I'm so excited that I am on the Bulletin Board, will you please add some more information for me. Yes, I do know the other person from Maryland (Yvonne) she gave me the Web sight. The information I wish to include is my maiden name Jean Klapp (Atkins) lived on Anstey Lane until my marriage in 1954 at St. Margaret's Church. After leaving school I worked for Adrian Ayres Shoe Manufacturer in Samuel St. and later at Lennards on the clock tower. I have one sister Ann, who lives at Thorpe Astley. I have been in the States since 1955 and have been back many times; the last time two years ago when my mother passed away. I guess I will always be British at heart I love to read about England and have a very special feeling when I step on British soil. I have a friend I would love to find one Sylvia Gooden (Jardine) who I went to school with and I know came to the States around 1957 to Lancaster Pa. Husband was named Charles. Love to hear from anyone from Leicester [Sept 25, 2000].

Yvonne Miles, now Fulton, born (1936) and raised in the Wharf St area, (25 Carley St). Moved a few times; had kind of shaky parents war come along; everything went wrong; 5 kids put in Countesthorpe Homes; ran away a few times. Us kids all put in different places at one time or another. Have twin sisters: Sandra and Gillian Miles; they don't want anything to do with the rest of the family. Have been trying to locate them for 15 years. It is not the best of what you all have in your backgrounds, but it's true and we have all learnt from it. We eldest 3 children made sure our offsprings had the nurturing that is so important to a growing child. I am the only one of my family over hear. I have a brother Barry Miles living in Anstey, and the other, Malcolm, lives in Bramcote, Nottingham. I am still a Brit after 40 years of living over here; cannot give the land of my birth up. I love her dearly. Just looking at all this nostalgic stuff within this website, the same feelings come back to me: this is my England, my country, you can never change that, and just looking at all the old Leics pics, etc, brings it all back. Want to thank one and all for so much pleasure, and thank you for letting me in.

I want to thank you so much for the pleasure you have given me. I was just given your [Friends of Leicestershire site] and I just cannot express what I am feeling at this moment after looking at your work. You have taken me back to a time that was forever locked away in my memory bank, I was born in 1936 and remember growing up in Wharf St, actually Carley St, now all pulled down. Are there any pics anywhere of those areas? This has actually made me feel a little homesick, but there is nothing wrong with that, I can go home if I want to so that's okay. I have to look at so much in this [Friends of Leicestershire site] and as I view it will drop in with you again. Thanks a load. Yvonne Miles Fulton [Sept 23, 2000].

I have great news through your site: I have contacted my first Cousin Phil Collins and his wife Dot in New Zealand. It has to be 40 years or more since I last heard of them. We have E-mailed each other; it is like finding a part of myself. Phil's Dad and my Dad were brothers from Dublin. Our Grandfather took the family to England in the 1920's. I passed the site on to a friend in Baltimore; she too thinks its great. Thanks again, Josie Farris [Sept 25, 2000].

I was born in Leicester in 1948 and lived in the city until I left to go to university in Ireland in 1968. I lived in a dead-end street just off East Park Road - the buildings of what was then the Chilpruffe factory loomed over my house, as did the tall chimney of the "diggy", the city waste incinerator. I attended St Barnabas primary and infant schools and then Alderman Newton's Boys' School (1960-67). After a year spent working for Corah's and Oliver's Shoes (at first in the old warehouse near Vestry Street, then the warehouse on the Blackbird Road industrial estate), I left the city to attend university and never returned to live on a permanent basis. I have worked in Sierra Leone, Ireland and now Japan, where I have been a resident for the past 17 years. I am married to a Japanese lady and have a daughter, Oonagh Deirdre, aged 10. I am a university lecturer and a writer. I am the author of two novels, The Foreign Husband (Marion Boyars, London 1989), Sachiko's Wedding (Marion Boyars, London 1990, Penguin Books, 1991) and one book of short stories, Misunderstandings (Marion Boyars, London, 1994). The latter won the Macmillan Silver Pen Award for Fiction in 1994. Although much of my published fiction is set here in Japan, readers might recognise the city of Loxley in my first novel. The final two stories in Misunderstandings concern a Leicester family. In spite of the length of time since I left the city, I still have family living there. I remain a fan of Leicester City FC, and I am a frequent visitor to any Leicester web sites.

Okay...I'm officially homesick from this great site. In 1991, my American mum told my English dad that his 1977 promise of only living in England for 5 years, had expired. Perfect time for them, crap time for me. I was in the middle of my A-levels at English Martyrs RC school, Anstey, and had to say goodbye to life as I knew it. I grew up in Braunstone and then we moved to Broughten Astley, Sutton-in-the-Elms (that one street in Broughten Astley). Aside from - let's see - the Walnut whips, pickled onions, monster munch, Bakewell tarts, sausage rolls, chips with watered down curry sauce, polos, rossi donuts up town, and best of best of best friends, I've settled okay in the US. There is a lot more opportunities and great places to see. I just wish that my "friends for life" were here to see it too. It's amazing how we learn to modify our "queues" and "Wot u gorming at" type lines rather than going through the hassel of explaining everything. I think that's how my accent has become watered down over the years. My last trip to Leicester was May 1999. I couldn't believe how it had changed in just a few years. Town is slowly forming into a mall instead of being able to walk from shop to shop. Lewis's doesn't exist anymore and has been replaced by a Marks & Sparks food store. The nightlife has been built up also. Well, I had better end this. I could go on forever and ever as I am sure you all understand.
