By E-mail: As a boy, along with some friends, we used to play in the same areas [Editor's Note: see article on Peewit Hollow] down by the old clay works, along blue bridge locks on the canal. We used to catch or watch the "fish" train every night down on the tracks before it was dinner time. We used to access the tracks from the top of Glen Hills Boulevard where it meets up with Lutterworth Road. The farmers used to get really mad with us when we trampled their crops. Fascinating Site. I lived in Leicester on Howard Road in Clarendon Park 1944 -1951, after moving from Loughborough. Went to Avenue Road School and then to the Wyggeston Boys Grammar School. Longtime Leicester City FC fan (Why are they called the Foxes now?). Had a brother who was a Police officer at Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough and Loughborough. Sister and Brother-in-law had a cafe in New Park Street near West Bridge and opposite the iron railway bridge at the bottom of the Newarke that I understand has now gone. Spent many happy hours at the Railway bank on the Freeman's Common - train spotting. Also down at the LNER [GC] sheds near the canal. Later used to go to the De Mont to see popular music shows: Frankie Laine, Les Paul and Mary Ford, etc., etc. Happy days! Coffees in Brucciani's at the bottom of Horsefair Street where we used to catch the 26 bus home. Either that or a number 4 Clarendon Park tram.

My first school was in Hinckley; I have forgotten the name of the road just off the junction of Leicester road, and just below the fire station. I used to walk from Park farm; there is a golf coarse there now. One memory of that school was the army trucks going by the school all day; must have been in 1941, as we moved to Upton House Farm, Upton in 1942 and I went to Sibson village school; this was a one teacher one room school and I forget the teacher's name. We had a new cook house built while I was there. The teacher was very handy with the cane too; on one occasion, she had a bundle of new cane`s about 6 inches in diameter much to the dismay of the younger children. It happened that I had noticed where the key for her locked cupboard was put, as I was the one to make up the fire to keep the room warm, so you can guess where the canes went. My penance was to break her coal and chop the sticks for her fire every lunch time for the rest of the time I was at the school. From there I went to Market Bosworth Secondary Modern and left at 14 (in 1947) to start work on the farm. I also lived Lutterworth and Bulkington and then back in Hinckley. Emmigrated in 1967.

My Grandfather was Noah Smith who owned a scrap metal business on Trafford Road. During my early years I lived on King Edward Road and Trafford Road where I had many wonderful neighbors and made lots of wonderful memories. My father died in 1956 (I think that was the year) and my mother later remarried an American service man who brought me, my mum, and young brother (Mark) stateside. We left England in 1963 and have only visited as tourists since then. My family remains in the Leicester area. I am living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
