I was born in May 1951 at Westcotes Maternity Hospital, and lived in Orchard Avenue, Glen Parva (it was Glen Hills when I was a lad). I went to Glen Hills Primary/Junior, South Wigston High, and Guthlaxton before joining GEC (then EECo) at Whetstone in 67. They sponsored me through a 3-yr HND Mech Eng course at Leicester Poly. After that I joined GEC's site installation dept. and got to travel about a bit. In 1980 they sent me to the Bruce Nuclear Power Development in Ontario, so before leaving I married Philippa Thompson who was born in Market Harborough on the same day as me. She was raised in Thurnby, and was teaching at Rushey Mead when we met. The job in Ontario lasted 3 years, and both Ben and Sarah were born while we were there. In 1985 we came to Dubai where I work for Dubai Natural Gas Company (Dugas). I was based in Calgary for most of 92 and 93 on the design and procurement of a new petrochem plant project for Dubai. Philippa now heads the Dyslexia Unit at a primary school in Dubai. I, too, am a graduate of the Peewit Hollow school of life skills, which included the use of a weapon known as a "mud yack." Does anyone else remember those?

Just wanted to drop a note to compliment you on your excellent web page. I'm an ex-pat, rather removed. My ancestor William Fellows was born there apparently in the 1580's, showed up in the colony records around 1639. I'd still like to come visit someday, though.

E-mail: The name 'Airey' has been one of mystery to me for many years - ever since I was little I knew about this family called the 'Airey's' who used to live in our house.(86 Leicester Road) I had a mental picture of a Victorian family living in a very dark, cold house (I do apologise - I was only small!) Having seen your website I have now been put right! What a great idea to write your history down for your children to learn about - should I ever start a family of my own this is certainly something I would consider doing! Your stories of childhood growing up in 86 Leicester Road, although a generation apart, brought back many similar memories of my own. You mentioned playing along the Great Central before it was closed, I too played along this same stretch of track, which became even more exciting to play on once they blew the bridge up - a haven for small children who shouldn't be there! I remember playing amongst the brick rubble with my brother and his friends but thinking 'If one of us gets hurt - how are we going to explain how it happened!'. Obviously this didn't deter us from playing down there and many a day in the long summer holidays we would set out on our bikes for another 'adventure'. Cycling up throught he spinney (Bluebell Woods - which sadly are very lacking in Bluebells now!) and finding our way out onto the track.  Once this track was tarmaced in my teenage years it served another useful purpose - a direct cycle route to the new McDonalds on Fosse park! Again somewhere we were not supposed to be going - but the journey back worked up enough of an appetite to fool mum into thinking that we still needed feeding! I read your section about Glen Hills School - which I also attended - I was one of the last infants to start school in the Wooden building and was moved within the first year to the newly built brick building. This 'new building' had rocky beginnings as the year I left, a boy in the year above me 'Jason' set it on fire (I don't think he was entirely happy!) I could never understand why he tried to burn a brick building, when there was a perfectly good wooden one - which would have burnt much more effectively - just across the road!  But that warm, wooden smell was to be preserved for a few more years to come. Unfortunately it's end has finally come. this year work has begun on extending the Featherby Drive building to accomodate Juniors and Infants, and the wooden building is to be pulled down - it did quite well though, it lasted about 50 years longer than was originally anticipated! I was intrigued to find out about all of the dead animals that were buried underneath our garden - we added to your menagerie with two gerbils and about 20 fish! It's no wonder the soil is so fertile there! Do you have any photos of what the house looked likw when you lived there? Obviously i was the reason for the extension so I've only ever known it to be that way! I would love to know more about your feelings of growing up in the house - did you find it spooky at night? If you get time it would be great if you  could mail me back! I will actually be flying into Calgary this summer (honeymoon!) as we're touring the Rockies - I'll keep my eyes peeled for you!

What an amazing site! I live in Coventry, England, and to get to Leicester it takes about half an hour (15 minutes if my hubby drives). I followed links about Sue Townsend, and found you... Lots of detail and humour. I haven't got time to read it all yet, but I'm putting it in my favourites so I can go back to it when its more convenient. Do you watch the ice hockey over there? Coventry has a new team called the Coventry Blaze (formally Sollihull Barons).

I lived in Countesthorpe, Leicestershire before coming to Canada 11 years ago. I grew up in Highfields, Leicester during the war years. I went to Medway St school, then on to Knighton Fields Rd school, then to Alderman Newton Girl's School (1946-1950). My first job was at the Co-op offices in Union Street. I got married in 1956 and had my first daughter at Westcotes Hospital in 1957, soon afterwards going to Gibraltar where my husband was stationed. When Brian was demobbed we lived on the Eyres Monsell Estate, then moving to Countesthorpe where we spent many happy years before coming to Canada in 1990. I worked for W.E.Sturgess's (Jaguar dealers) for 25 years. I have been back to dear 'old' Leicester a few times and enjoy 'going home' so much. We are moving to Nova Scotia in June. What a wonderful list. I wish there were one for Fulham/Hammersmith, London. The reason I am contacting this list is in the hope of searching out my lost family. It is a long story but I will make it short: My great grandmother was an Ada Hutchins (nee Wakeling) who had a nursing/maternity home in Leicester from sometime between 1900-1950. I do not know the exact dates. She adopted a baby girl named Mary whose mother died in childbirth and I know that Mary has gone on to marry a man named Gerald. I know that Ada died around 1952 in Leicester. My grandmother was Gertrude Hutchins who lived with her maternal grandmother until coming to live with Ada in 1906 in Leicester on Rendell Road. Can anyone out there help me find my family??? Thank you and God bless - Nicky.

I am starting a group for ex pupils of Winstanley Community College, Braunstone & Bosworth College, Desford. You can find our site, and details of how to join us, at the URL mentioned above. **Thanks a lot Tim for all your hard work** ;-)

Added by E-mail:

Winstanley and Bosworth are in fact separate schools that liaise with each other - but as far as I can remember we all had to make the move because of capacity problems. Winstanley (Braunstone), Charnwood School and Market Bosworth College all made an input of 14 year olds to Bosworth who numbered over a 1000 pupils. If you would like more details about my group - it can be found at the [above website URL]  - we even have a teacher from Bosworth in the group! For myself I attended Winstanley 1981-84 and Bosworth 1984-88. I then went on to Southfields College (Leicester School of Printing) 1988-1990. If you are cataloguing earlier schools (infant and primary schools) I attended Middlefield infants 1975-1977 and Richmond Junior School 1977 in Hinckley (and now known collectively as Richmond Primary these days) and later in Leicester: Eyres Monsell Junior School 1978, Kingway Primary School, Braunstone 1979-1981. Full titles of the Winstanley and Bosworth Schools are : Winstanley Community College, Kingsway North, Leicester. Bosworth Community College, Leicester Lane, Desford. Hope this is a help to you. I do know this of her education, she doesn't take any gruff from any obnoxious Yank who might get in her way. Hi Tim. I don't often listen to Radio Leicester, but your mention of the Foursights [this morning] made all those nostalgic hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Great web page! I knew Bill Coleman - we were in the Air Training Corps (IF) Squadron. In fact we used to have a sort of jazz-busking get together in the ATC hut and we created a "band" which played to a very small audience consisting of a few mates (Flaz and Jim Knowles) and a couple of girls from the Girls Training Corps. The "band" was aptly named "Colonel B. Strudwick Wickerwire's Paramount Symphonic Jazz Ensemble." When I say I knew Bill - he was musically speaking my hero! What a wizard - you hum it son and I'll play it. Anyway - I joined the RAF and we lost contact. However, I did hear of the Foursights. And I was there, in the audience at Glen Parva, along with one of those girls from the Girls training Corps! I married her in 1964, we now have eight Grandchildren:-)

I recognise the phrase but can't for the life of me remember what it was from. I grew up in Twyford (Waterford House) went to Twyford school 1949? Also Sarson Girls School, Melton 1955? to 1958? then to Melton Tech. Worked at Aster (is that the right spelling) Aircraft then came to Australia. I did work at Pera for a while in the early 60's. Married my Dudley from Melton and still cooking his tea and making his coffee (sorry he doesn't drink tea). Now we have a little Tasmanian Devil who is just two weeks old, which makes me a great grandma. I am just learning all about this internet etc. (only had the thing for a couple of months) and this is the first time I have filled in a form, so this is a first for me. Oops no it isn't I did fill one out on your discussion site yesterday (which I can't find today).

Greetings and a Happy 2001 from the Big White North! I have lived in Canada for 35 years but was born and grew up in Leicester. Attended Narborough Rd Infants, then Shaftesbury Rd School, then Gateway Boys (now College). Lived at 70 Hinckley Rd till emigrated. Married since 1966 to Jackie (Watts) who lived in new Parks. We met in Leicester and married in Canada. Also here are Jackie's sisters Audrey and Elaine and B-in-Law Jack (Nimmo). Jackie attended King Richard's Road School. Is there anybody out there? Should add - recently bought a Nissan, salesman Nick Taylor was born in Leicester, lived in Kirby Muxloe.

Added by E-mail:

I don't recall the exact years I was at Gateway so let's calculate. Born in '42, passed the 11+ so it must have been about 1954 I started. Was not a star pupil and "dropped out" in late 1959, I think. Teachers I remember were G.A. Stevenson - Geography - kindly sort, always smelled of tobacco. Jim Keadie - sports teacher, always remember us being sent on cross country runs around Beaumont Leys sewage farm when the weather wasn't conducive to sports. Then there was Mr. Drinkwater - French, Mr. Freer - English, Mr. Stonehouse - Science, Sam Coda - Science?. Then there was Mr Bailey - History (he was also a customer of my dad's electrical business). Our math and also home room teacher's name is lost to me, but I do recall Mr. Haddow who I think also taught Maths. Mr. Barton (nickname Dick!) was also a French teacher. "Chalky" White was an art teacher, that just came back to me now. And of course Mr Frazer was headmaster for much of the time I was there, his wife was a J.P. or something of that sort, remember reading about Mrs. Y. Frazer in the legal news in "the Mercury."

As a footnote to my last email, I have a bag of Fox's Glacier Mints in my desk at work and still recall the factory near Gateway School, on the corner of Oxford St., and the aroma of mint in the air some days. The old school building is of course now Gateway College. Oh yes, I forgot to say that at school I was in Tudor House - White sports shirts. The other were Skeffington, Lancaster, Chantry, Red, Blue and Yellow? shirts. Seems very old schooly these days. [June 2nd, 2001]

Elizabeth and Peter were residents of Belper Street. No`s 135 and 144. Elizabeth (nee Garton) was born in Leicester, early in 1931. Peter, a Londoner, was evacuated there during the war, in 1940. They both attended Catherine and Belper Street schools when schooling facilities were so restricted, until 1945. Headmasters were at these times, a Mr Crofts and a Mr Haddely. Peter joined the Royal Navy in 1947 and after courting his school friend and neighbour Elizabeth, they were married in the City Town Hall in the August of 1950. They traveled around Britain and the World together as a serving Naval couple until Peter was discharged to pension, as a Chief Petty Officer in 1970. During these hard years, having 4 healthy sons. Glenn, Alan, David and Paul. All of whom are by now, well into their 40s. Migrating to Australia in 1971, they settled in the Perth area to this day, have worked in various countries in the far east. For example.. The Philippines (twice), Laos, New Guinea, Singapore to quote a few. They are now fully retired to pension and are happily married, just celebrating their 50th anniversary. They have 10 Grandchildren between the ages of 25 and 5 yrs. 6 girls and 4 boys. Very fit and active, Peter is a "silver surfer" having been "surfing the net" for the past 3 years. They are both very keen to make contact with Elizabeth's Family (named Welsh) and old friends from Leicester. If you remember us, please make the effort to "call" and we promise to answer all messages. God Bless you all.

Well, I was born in Barrow Upon Soar in 1965. I moved to Loughborough when I was 7, unfortunately my family moved as well. We lived at 401 Park Road till I left for Australia at 23. I went to Garendon and Burleigh schools (a loose description) and couldn't wait to get out of there. I left school in 1981 at the height of unemployment and couldn't get a job. The Morris's crane factory took me on a one year training scheme at $25 per week. After that finished, again no work, this time Brush Switchgear stepped in and offered me a job and lots of money. so I did a technical apprenticeship, during which I went to Loughborough Technical College... another school and more doom... After my apprenticeship, I worked in the drawing office, then in the contracts dept before I left for Davy Linear Motors (now gone) who were in the old Herbert Morris buildings along the canal. In 1988 I left for Australia and have never looked back. Now, in 2001, I have a house close to the sea, a great lifestyle and my own business operating across Australia.
