Born Hinckley 1944, attended Hinckley Grammar school 1956-1958, Humphrey Perkins Grammar School 1958-1961, Midland Bank 1961-1968. Married Bruce A. Smith 1966. Moved to Palm Desert CA 1987.
Editor's Note:
Bruce Smith is the "long lost second cousin" of my childhood friend (and ex-Foursights' member) Doug Abbott. They had lost contact with each other after sometime in the late fifties. Doug wrote to me and said: "...Through it [your website] I have located a long lost second cousin of mine. You remember my Grandparents who lived on Greendale Rd. We lived on the Bridle and our gardens met at the bottom and we could walk from our house to theirs. Well Gramps had a brother, Frank, who had a son who had a son. Bruce Smith moved to the US in 1987 and lives with his wife in Virginia Beach. He arrived there via Palm Springs through his job. Bruce was checking out Leicester Expats' and, of course, he couldn't miss our group info' and my bio'. Thanks again. We have corresponded several times and are getting up to speed at a moderate clip. I haven't seen or heard from him since I was about twelve or thirteen. His family would visit us whilst we were on holiday in the Mablethorpe area of Lincolnshire." So you see, the expats' network continues to work wonders. Be encouraged.

Born 1940 in Derby but moved to Oadby in 1947. Attended Gartree Secondary Modern 1947-1952 & Kibworth Grammar 1952-1959. After getting married, emigrated for 10 pounds each in 1965. PS: My wife Jan Marchant is on your list but the email address is incorrect same as mine listed above. PPS: You commented about the name changes to the Kibworth school. As I remember Kibworth Grammar was changed to Kibworth High in 1964 or 1965 when a new school opened at Oadby for the 11+ lot (was that exam still going then) and I assume Kibworth was 'down-graded.' Pity, the old place has gone, but at least the old school house remains or was in 1999. Cheers, John. Up the City!

Home addresses (in brief): Braunstone, New Parks, Brading Road, then too numerous to list here. Jobs include telephone technician, milkman, draughtsman, truck driver, corporation bus driver, rock group road manager, driving instructor. Many friends in Leicester which I visit about once every two/three years to see son, daughter, granddaughter, friends and (of course) to taste REAL BEER again in a REAL PUB! Would love to correspond with a lady I knew in the 70's (I left in '78) called Linda. She owned a dark green ex-GPO Morris Minor van at that time. Or, in fact, with any ex-girlfriend (I'm single again) with a view to meeting up on my next visit (whenever) to share a pint and a few laughs.

Comments:
It was Kibworth Beauchamp Grammar school for boys and girls. It used to be a boys boarding school; however, with the war and all, 1947 etc., the girls got to go there. In my day the Headmaster was Mr. Elliot; the Gym teacher, Miss Morgan; the Gym master, Mr. Davis; Miss Woods, English; Miss Grey, Geography/Music. Mr. Tsqared (gorgeous) chemistry teacher used to throw chalk at your head! Mr. Wynyard, Math, said I would never amount to anything (he looked consumptive). Mr. Smith, Music (nervous Breakdown); Miss Barton, Art; Miss Griffith, French and domestic Science. None of these people particularly liked me. I wanted SO much to sing in the "Mikado." Miss Grey heard me sing, and I was good, but she never looked at me. Miss Morgan was my favourite until she told me I could not wear my glasses to play Hockey. I could not see without them and I was the Goalie and the Captain. I ran like the wind and swam like a fish. I was a Trojan. Avis Douglas was my heroine; she said I never would learn to dive. I took the silver cup for the Trojans and shared it with someone. We learned to swim at Market Harborough baths in those days. My Schoolmates were Frieda Knott, Thelma Dollow, Monica Selly, Stella Evans, Josie Claxton, Margaret Williamson Aileen Partridge, Elizabeth Fidoe and me the tomboy Ruth Harrison. And I really did amount to something. I became a Medical/X-ray Technologist with a degree for the United States Indian Health service and 22 years on an Indian Reservations in the West. I did good. And it was Kibworth Beauchamp Grammar School that made me that way. Nobody will remember me. but I remember everything good that ever happened there. We had to use different rooms in the village of Kibworth as the school wasn't big enough to hold us all. What a time that was. What hardship, BUT we got the basics and thats what counts.

Mother (Joy Marguerite Hickman - wife of Claude James) died a few years ago - she is buried next to Claude in the cemetery on the Syston Road. If anyone who lived on Northdown Drive / Southdown Drive or Westdown Drive in Thurmaston in the 50's remembers us we'd love to hear from you. I remember kids first names and a few last names but many names are long since lost. John, Robert and Helen Cross lived next door. My military service took me all over the world, and I left the Army and went to work for a Bank in London and then was transferred to New York. Now I find myself working on Wall Street and living in New Jersey. At the end of the day, I am a lad from Wigston. I never forget that, as I feel it is very important to remember your roots and from whence we came. I still follow the Tigers and I miss greatly the pubs, cricket and of course rugby. In my heart I would love to return to my homeland, but in reality I doubt if that will ever happen now. With sites like this I can least have a look at the city and the countryside and at least imagine what it would be like to be back in that wonderful part of the world.

Hi Tim, I've been trying to e-mail you directly but your 'hotmail' is not accepting. Just wanted to send condolences on your Mum's passing. I'm sure I must have crossed paths with her as my Gran would only let us go to Lewis's for all our makeup and skincare products. She said they were the only ladies you could trust!! Once again sorry for your loss and well wishes to your Mum wherever her new path has taken her!! Take Care Sue Corbett. P.S. Thank you for removing those messages!! I'm sure the last thing you wanted for this site was politics!!!

Ruth was one of the very earliest visitors to Leicester Overseas (see message No, 16). She recently wrote to me (by E-mail) in response to my Mum's bereavement notice that ran in the Mercury during the last week of May, 2001. This is Ruth's message:
I live in South Lake Tahoe in the Keys, but my home was in Wigston, Leicester, England, and I remember Lewis's so very well. I worked at Marshall and Snelgroves in the Cosmetic Dept under Miss Ward and Miss Cowell. They were both tyrants. I quit school at Kibworth when I was 15, so I know your Mom was working then and the makeup RIMMEL was very popular and I'm sure I remember her! Marshal and Snelgroves was across from Marks and Spencers and next door to the Robin Hood pub where I met my Husband a long time ago. I'm younger than your Mom, but my Mom took me to Lewis's from the day I was born. Darn near every weekend on Saturday because she would go to the Market for Veggies, Etc. Anyway just a note. Your Mom lived a long time and I'm sure you have lots of memories. My girlfriend Margaret (Williamson) of Wigston Magna sent the E mail. I am forwarding it to you. You see I've lived here so long, worked for the Indian Health service at Gardnerville and my other home is Fallon, Nevada where my husband (D Schrutz) and I moved from Duluth in the service. My training and apprenticeship at Marshall & Snelgroves in Leicester (In those days I was Ruth Harrison in the Perfumery Dept cosmetic sales: Elizabeth Arden, Cyclax, Helena Rubinstein. That gave me my first break when I married at 19 and ended up in Duluth Minn April 1955. I too worked for Madame Rubenstein!! I met many of the sales reps and received many gifts over the Xmas's from her. She and Elizabeth Arden were incredible women. I ended up as a buyer in Madison, Wisc and with John Robert Powers!! So you see, Leicester ladies had a lot to give to the USA.

The following was sent to me by E-mail in response to my Mother's bereavement notice in the Mercury. Chris Lymn is a Leicester author and his book about Leicester City, "We Love You Leicester," has been offered for sale on this website since last year.
Comments:
Your mother and my mother, Mabel (Mabs) Lymn (nee White) were best friends from 1929 to the mid forties at least. I think they met through their work at Wynnes cafe in Leicester (which is still there). They would have been natural friends, both liking the bright lights, dancing and socialising. My mother played the piano in city centre pubs. Stella used to stay the night occasionally at my mother's place in Rowan Street. I think Stella's speech and dress sense was a big influence on my mother. Stella had a flat in New Walk. My mother was married in 1936 and I came along in 37 (7 Oct). Stella was the first person to see me at my birth at Bembridge Close. Their friendship continued during the war. They frequented a pub called the County Arms in Glen Parva (still there) popular with the US 82nd Airborne which was based here prior to D-Day. I don't know what happened after the war, when our fathers returned, but as a kid, I vaguely remember [your sister] Judy... In another coincidence, my wife Jennifer began working life as a beautician, working for Max Factor at Lewis's store (in the late fifties). She asked Stella if she was Mabel's friend. She remembers your mother as always immaculately presented... My mother died in 1998, aged 87. We noticed your mother's death in the paper, guessing it was the same person. That's about it really - I hope this is of interest to you. Best wishes, Chris Lymn

School's Out details: Newarke Girls' Grammar School Aut. 1967 - Summer 1974. Headmistress was Miss Waddington when I started, but she retired and Miss Clover took over. Memories of Science with Miss Oram, Geography with Mr Beaumont/Mr Thomas, History with the formidable Mrs Morgan and later with the brilliant Miss Furnace. Games with Miss Bond was absolute torture - but she also retired soon after I started. The Lower VI common room was a den of inequity - and usually full of smoke ! Anyone with similar memories - feel free to contact me.

I am looking for my cousin Allen Bradshaw. For many years he lived on Spaulding Street off the Green Lane Road; his Mum was the former Ethel McNulty. Alan served in the Royal Navy during the War. He married an Irish girl, Doreen, who for many years worked at the bakery shop next door to the 3 Sisters' shop on East Park Road. They had two daughters - one named Victoria. We lost contact with Alan many years ago, but he is always in my heart. Alan had glorious red hair as did my Auntie Ethel. If anyone knows anything about Alan's family, I would love to know. I have already found another cousin through this site, and a long ago girl friend. My e-mail address is [email protected]

Saw your feature and thought I would drop a line. Although I live in Blaby I do remember you from going to South Wigston School the same year but perhaps not the same form. I also remember that when we left school you had a band and we used to go to Countesthorpe Hall to see you perform. Quite the "in-thing" at that time. I was in the same year as Bill Holland and still see him often. I got married in 1966 to Sue from Enderby and we had two girls and am now a Grandad. We divorced in 1990, and I met a Blaby girl, Pat Rainbow, and we have been married now for 7 years. She went to school with Sue Townsend, was in the same form and a few years ago they had a school reunion. She also went to school with Carol Lowe who now lives in Nova Scotia. She met Tom on a flight over to Canada when she was visiting her aunt a few years ago and has since settled down there. We visited her for a holiday for three weeks and had a wonderful time. We did the Cabot Trail amongst other things. Carol's aunt and uncle and cousins have visited us in England a few times now where they stay with us and visit Europe and other friends in England.

I'd just like to thank Tim Airey once again for this excellent website, and to say what a good idea his "School's Out" page is. I attended Wyggeston Girls' Grammar School from 1962 to 1969, and have made several contacts with fellow Old Girls through this site. This prompted me to set up my own WyggyGirls website (see the URL above), and so far we have 20 members - new members are always most welcome. So far no former teachers have joined, which is a pity as we'd love to hear your reminiscences too! Best regards, Kerrie. P.S. I cracked up at the wording on this form's Reset Button :-)

Just dropped in to surf your site. I am doing a bit of family history searching. Thought I'd shake the old family tree and see what falls out. My Great-grandfather was Joseph B. Mitchell born 1855 in Sileby, Barrow-Upon-Soar and his first wife was Frances (Fanny) Chamberlain from Kibworth, Beauchamp. Have I got those names right? Hard to find on modern maps. J.B.'s second wife was Matilda Palmer from Leicester or Leamington, Warwickshire. We're not clear on that yet. If this rings any bells for anyone drop me a line, I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Although not an ex-pat (yet we are thinking about it) my brother emailed your site address because of [your] connection with Glen Parva. I was one of the fans of the Primates and the Foursights right from the start. I went to the Palais to support you all when you won the contest to produce "And I Cry" and we screamed and screamed. A few weeks ago we were listening to the radio on a Saturday morning in the car and heard a reference to the record and it was played. Unfortunately, and frustratingly we missed the beginning and do not know who made the request! I live in Boston (England!) now and have very little contact with Glen Parva, although my parents still live there [on Hillsborough Road]. Enjoyed sharing all the memories of Peewit Hollow, Bluebell Spinney etc. All favourite haunts as a child. I wish you all the success with the site - most enjoyable.
