Comments:
Hi, I'm very interested in contacting a friend I knew in the mid to late '70s. I visit England approximately every two to three years so I see most of my old mates, but I have yet to find this one. Her name is Linda, she would be (now) about 45 y.o. When I knew her she was single and owned a dark green ex-GPO Morris Minor van. She was slightly taller than average with shoulder length brown hair. I can't add much more to that except that I would dearly love to exchange a few emails or letters with her to hear how she's getting on and (maybe) even meet her on one of my visits (next one in 2002 or 2003). If anyone recognises her from the above, and knows of her whereabouts, could they please let me know or pass my email address to her. In case she doesn't have access to email, I can send my postal address to be passed on to her so she can write to me. One of my friends has seen her in Leicester two or three times in the last couple of years so presumably she still lives there. At the time when I knew her I lived in Cranmer Street (near the junction of Narborough Road and Hinckley Road) and we used to meet in the Spread Eagle pub on Charles Street on Saturday nights. Thanks a million for any help. Rick

Added by E-mail:
Went to Wyggy in 1945, the 1st year of the 11+ or scholarship as we called it. I remember at my junior school, all the "successful" names were called out one by one so you knew if you weren't by not hearing your name! The headmaster of my junior school, Coleman Road, was, I think, a Mr. Robinson who was chairman of Leicester Schools Football, and that was his chief interest. I couldn't sing (I still can't) so I was made to stand at the side with all the other "growlers" at assembly and not allowed to sing. Some things in education HAVE improved! The classes were about 45 strong, and when I was in the top year, I was allowed to just do my own reading and arithmetic problems and ignore what was going on in the class. When I got to Wyggy, a lot of the teachers thought the school had gone downhill, having to take in us scholarship boys and made sure we knew we weren't up to the previous lot. Fortunately, I was used to ignoring what elders said so it didn't affect me too much. I remember a classics teacher, Mr. Lupton, who was disappointed at not being more senior and showed he didn't like the then new headmaster Mr. Larkin. I also remember a Mr. Hesselgreaves, the senior Maths teacher, who was dedicated to getting his boys into Oxford or Cambridge - he was good at it too. There was also that ghastly open air swimming pool we were all forced to go in, even when it was about 55 degrees F. I don't think it ever got above 60. There was a dreadful woman swimming teacher who was only interested in those who could win races. So, after 4 years' lessons, I couldn't swim a stroke. And I never swam at all until I was 40, and then only very badly. But it did give me sympathy with those less good academically and how they had to suffer. I remember boys called Barr, Towers, Bennett and Walsh but I totally lost touch with all of them by about 1960.

Editor's Comment:
My sister Angela (now living in Nevada) used to walk Dr. Edwards' greyhounds and likes to relate the story of how she was rounding a corner in Glen Hills with the greyhounds when they came upon a lady walking her fluffy white poodle. The greyhounds took the poodle for "The Hare" and promptly launched themselves upon it. Angela swears that all that was left of the poodle was the collar and leash. What? Well I thought it was funny...

From E-mails: I was at Glen Hills School until 1953. Recollections: Headmaster was Mr W. E. Looker, teachers were Mr. M. Shepherd (1952), Mr. M. G. Scott (1952), Mr. A. Taylor (1951), Miss S. M. Walker (1949-50), Miss M. F. James (1948). A boy in my year was called Johnny Angel. He was our star footballer when I was goalie. I obviously lost touch with everyone in Glen Hills when I moved, but learned much later that Johnny became a pro footballer with Doncaster Rovers. He badly broke a leg and gave up. My school reports show a typical class size of 45 plus. Later, I was at Loughborough Grammar school from 1953 to 1960. Later still, I worked for Fisons Pharmaceuticals in Loughborough from 1960 to1992. I was Market Research Manager. Now retired.

Our family left Leicester in 1972. We moved to Windsor, Nova Scotia. Two years later we moved to St.Croix, seven miles away. This is home base, though I have spent a lot of time on the road. Travelling being a passion, I have spent six months backpacking Europe, five months in Central America, Nine-and-a-half months travelling around Asia and the South Pacific. Have been across Canada three times and seen a fair bit of the U.S. These trips resulted in many paintings and continue to inspire more. My web site will be updated soon with more recent works. It is always a pleasure to return to England for a holiday. Most of my paintings are of England.

It would be so nice to hear from some people from my past. The sad part of leaving a country is that you have no past there, you have to create one. I have gone back to England every year, so I have seen Leicester change. I don't like all the changes, but I still love the people there. My family still all live in England: My mother's name is Gaynor and my dad was David Haynes, I have a brother Carl Haynes who attended Alderman Newton Boys School in the late 60's, early 70's, a sister Penny who attended Mary Lindwood Girls School and some younger siblings, Dean, Elena, Paul and David, all with the last name of Haynes. My dad was from the East End of London, but my mother is a Leicester gal. Thank you for the wonderful website, it has certainly brought a little nostalgia to Northern California. This truly is a small world and I am grateful for that. Take care and keep up the good work, it's appreciated!

Thanks for your reply - I started redesigning Town Hall Square in 1984, but it didn't get funding until 1988. It was my last project at the LCC, the supervision of the contract being finished off by a colleague after I'd left in '89. Glad you liked it, I used old photos & plans and the piece of existing railing at New Walk Museum to base the design on, plus I specified that only plants that would have been known at the time it was first opened were to used. I forgot to mention that I think the site is great, particularly the paintings - I get nostalgic for steam trains too - I got quite carried away last night looking at the railway links!(543)

Hello to a fellow ex-Wiggy pupil. It could be Freudian but I have great difficulty remembering dates. Do you correct spelling too? [certainly do - Ed]. I am now the great age of 51 and a grandmother. I went to South Wigston Girls School from Glen Hills Primary. Glen Parva means something all together different these days - a Young Offenders Institution! But not in my day when the boys were very comfortably next door. This, of course, was quite welcome from one girl who was out-numbered by three brothers. We did get up to some fairly hair raising 'tricks' in those days - I confess. But in between times, I went to ballet and piano lessons... We lived at the County Arms, Blaby. [Actually it's in Glen Hills - Ed]. A very strange building but we had such fun there. There were fantastic gardens on two levels. Being next to the canal barges stopped during the summer and there was a real holiday feeling. I remember Peewit Hollow. We had a young Retriever as a pet who would bring us lost or injured chicks to nurse. Some summers we had plagues of frogs - they were every where, tiny perfect little frogs. There were so many that they formed a carpet in the grounds. The other side of the County Arms was the river Sence, and beyond that, the railway line and small station [Blaby]. In front of the County Arms was the busy main road [the A426]. There were several nasty accidents, especially on the junction of the road [Little Glen Road] leading to Wigston. I cannot remember the name of the road opposite [New Bridge Road] but my friend Yvonne Coveney lived at the bottom near the little humped bridge. The County Arms was on several floors with, I think, about 5 or 6 bars. From the kitchen upstairs we would send each other up and down in the "dumb-waiter." Why do children feel they are indestructible? Although perhaps we were because we somehow survived. We also used to crawl along the concrete window boxes - to each others bedrooms - when we were supposed to be sleeping. The windows must have been about 30 ft high! There are many stories of my brother's antics. I would often join in but much of the time I recall standing at one side with my fist in my mouth.
But at Glen Hills, I started in Miss Stockwell's class at 6 yrs old. Unbeknownst to me at that time, I had very fortunately missed Miss Ralph's class. I remember the smell of creosote that was used on the timber buildings. I then went to Miss Scott's class - she was a brilliant teacher of embroidery I recall, but could be quite cruel. But then Mrs. Chalmers set the balance right, for me anyway, a real lovely and clever lady. So I was quite apprehensive about leaving her and moving on to the 'big' school. I remember that Wigston Girls wore a very smart blazer - dark blue with light blue ribbon edging, and a 'lovely' dark blue velvet/felt hat with the light blue ribbon around the crown. My very best friend ever was Gillian Butler - still is. Gill even did party bags for the children at her 50th - there must have been something in the water in those days. Unfortunately, I had to decline my place at college when I left school (in Warwick) to work and look after my brothers. I did various jobs then and afterwards - to fit around my children as they arrived. So I went to University and graduated as a Grannie. I became a Social Worker in child protection. I had fantastic tutors and made real friends at Coventry University. I felt very proud because my great grand father was Stephen George Poole. He lived in and loved Coventry, and it is written that he worked tirelessly to improve housing and in social work - during 1700s and 1800's. I have recently been involved with research with the "Family Rights Group." The launch was in London on 13th Sept - just after the awful events in New York. I watched some of the news that afternoon - I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing. I thought it was some awful spoof /film. I am so very sorry for all those there. Other people I remember from those days were Judith Clay from Blaby, Jane Murdock and Marilyn Berry. I will probably have better recall in a few years when senility sets in. I really love it when I get a chance to revisit the Blaby/Glen Parva area; I hope others get the chance to as well. I have not yet travelled through all the info in Leicester Overseas. Thank you for offering this site; I like it. Very best wishes - Fran Williams

Student at Leicester Polytechnic in electronics and electrical engineering (1976-1980). 1980 was my best period in Leicester; the city where I started drinking, playing tennis and dancing - it was a good time. Leicester is still in my mind. I don't want to return to Leicester again because I have very good memories of friends; most of them lived in the city. I have in mind good memories of the Pall and some pubs that may not exist now. It's twenty two years ago. I never forgot such clubs as Bailly's, Granny's, L'heas, Adam and Eve, The Durham Ox, The Prohibition, The Isabella and others ... I miss very much the Winston pub, The George at the clock tower, The Tavern, The Pizzaland, The Haymarket Hall, Lewis's and the uncovered market. You know my house is called Leicester House; my garden is called Leicester Garden. Excuse me as I can't find a words for giving what is in my heart. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
Editors Comments:
I have done some very extensive editing on this message. It was obviously heart-felt, so I thought it worthwhile making readable. I still may not have the clubs and pubs correct.

Tim, Without a doubt you have one of the best sites I have visited. I am an Ex Pat of Bristol now living in St. Louis, Mo USA. We have our chat page with the Bristol Evening Post, nothing like yours, but its a link with everyone. The reason I am contacting you is when I was at the 82nd Airborne website I saw your address. I was at the site looking for information about the 82nd Airborne stay in England in 1943-1945. The towns where they were billeted. I understand some of the old troopers go back every year to toss a few pint back and I was looking for the names of the places. If you can help with some towns, I would appreciate it. Thanks, I will be back to your site again soon. Best regards Al Rogers.
Lived in Shirehampton, Bristol. Moved to the USA in 1954. Spent 6 years in the Merchant Navy and 30 years in the US Army, now retired.
Editors Note:
Al is talking about the famous American 82nd Airborne Division, elements of which were stationed in and around Leicester just prior to D-Day: The Divisional headquarters were in Braunstone Park. The 504th Parachute Infantry were camped on Shady Lane near the village of Evington. The 325th Glider Regiment were camped on Beeby Road near Scraptoft. The 80th Antitank Battery were camped near Oadby. Leicestershire Airfields were used to transport (including gliders) the 82nd to the various D-Day invasion drop sites and landing sites.

Hi Tim,
Bet you don't remember me, I went out with Bill Coleman in 1963 at the height of
the Foursights popularity as I remember. I've still got 'And I cry' has it got
collectors value now?
Anyway, I worked in Barclays Town Hall square under the office where Lynn worked,
did you two end up together? I saw her coming out of the office between Barclays and Brucciani's
several times, maybe she was visiting friends who worked there.
I still see Bill Coleman around sometimes, he hasn't changed much! I worked till last year at the Haymarket Theatre and
Bill sometimes played
in the orchestra if someone was off sick. I work in Countesthorpe now so
probably won't see him, unless he turns up at the De Montfort Hall when
I go to concerts there.
Are you still in music? My son Paul
sang in a band called Stairwell in Derby for 5 years, they were similar
in popularity to Foursights, quite a big local following. He previously
drummed for a Leicester band called the Marmite Sisters.
All the best,
Penny. I lived at Willoughby Waterleys when at Guthlaxton Grammar (left in
1963). Married Pete Groom in 1969 and lived in Lutterworth for a few
years, but now we live in Countesthorpe. We have 2 grown up sons Matt
& Paul. One in London and one in Derby.

I used to live at no 84 Leicester Rd (parents still do) and found your site very interesting - many changes made since the time you would have lived next door! Unlike yourself and Claire Arthur (I used to hang about with her brother Simon, and remember when he got a zx81 and thought it was amazing!) I didn't grow up there, but moved there when I was about 9, and soon set about exploring the place; Peewit, Great Central Way, the spinney and the river being favourites.
Editors Comments:
Just to clarify: Tony is referring to the fact that he used to live next door (and adjoining) to the house where I grew up in Glen Hills. Claire Arthur also grew up in that same house (No. 86) but after my parents had sold the place (well obviously). Tony's uncle is the Leicester author David Icke.

I grew up in Cosby, name then was Joan Robertshaw, had 4 sisters and a brother. I attended Cosby Junior School 1953-1958 then attended South Wigston Girls High School 1958-1962. Leaving school, I started working for AM Walker transport in Cosby. I married Keith Hammond from Blaby - I have many wild memories from Blaby/Glenhills and Rock n Roll nights at Whetstone. I have 3 children and 3 grand children. I split with Keith and moved to Scotland where I still live. My move was encouraged through my interest in Spiritualism. I work for a global semi conductor company but due to a very severe down turn, I will be made redundant end of January 2002 so guess another chapter of my life will then begin. Who knows, maybe I'll do full circle and return to Leicester.
Added by E-mail:
Keith you may have known as 'Wal' or 'Biffo' two nicknames. The first one a South Wigston teacher gave him as he thought he looked like Wally Hammond the cricketer and the second nickname takes no explaining as you will probably remember him for always fighting - Keith along with Ges Weston, Phil Weston, Age Meredith, etc. never allowed a Saturday 'dance' to go by without a good fight outside, but when I compare their fights to what happens today they were pretty mild. I that everyone thought you were 'posh' and very dishy. I remember Val Pretty also. Sue Johnston [later Sue Townsend of Adrian Mole fame] was in my class at Wiggie. We had some laughs. She was great: knickers on the flag pole, red socks, the lot. There was hardly a day went by that Sue was not on the stage for something. I and four other ex class mates arranged a reunion in 1988. We even had a cake made with the school badge on.

Thank you for the email. I was reading it with interest and kept thinking that your surname seemed familiar. I have to say that I didn't attend Glen Hills until 1968 [left in '75]. On further reading I realised that my eldest sister, Barbara Erett, was a big pal of your sister Sally. I can remember now where you lived and Sally was a regular visitor to our house and likewise Barbara would visit Sally. I am listed as Susan Knight on Friends Re united but in fact our surname was Erett when I was at Glen Hills. Yours wasn't the only dysfunctional family around... I intend to pass your web site address to Barbara and my older brother Robert. I feel sure Rob will find it all very interesting. Oh and yes, wasn't Peewit Hollow great?

I was known as Paul Bussingham when I attended Glen Hills Primary 1966 to 1968. My teacher was Mrs Bailey. I lived in Needham Ave and hung around with Nigel Birch. Our haunts were the old pond behind Needham Ave, Peewit Hollow, the canal and the ruins of the old troll factory. Moved away from Leicester in 1968 to live in Rugby, then moved to Australia in 1969. Like Tim, we were always getting into trouble. Unfortunately many names are forgotten, but Glen Parva was a highlight of my childhood.
Added by E-mail:
First of all, let me congratulate you on your excellent site. It was late last night that I took a quick glimpse and ended up spending almost 2 hours browsing your site. Your memoirs on your home page (especially the ones that featured Glen Parva) brought back a lot of great memories, many places I'd forgotten had existed, even though I was about 10 years behind you. I remember many a day walking the disused railway tracks near Peewit Hollow - these old quarries were my (and my friends) territory, but there was another area we frequented that I just can't put a name to: From Glen Hills Primary, you followed the road and across a brook into a large park - on the far side of the park was a Spinney (or woods) and if you crossed these, you came out again at the railway - these woods were also our area - and of course, to a 9-10 year old, haunted.

I was born in Rowan Street, Leicester in 1930 and moved to Anstey when I was two years of age. I attended the village schools until I was 14 and then worked for the Leicester Co-operative Printing Society in Church Gate until I was 18 and ready for National Service. I decided to volunteer for the Royal Navy as a Writer and finally left as a Petty Officer Writer in 1955. I then entered the Civil Service and eventually retired from British Telecom in 1985. Although I have not lived in Leicester since 1948, I still regard it as my home, and I am always on the lookout for news and information about my old haunts etc. In this respect, I am looking for a publication entitled 'Anstey - The Changing Scene' by J.W.Lowe, published in 1985 price 1.95. Should anyone have a copy of this, which they wish to dispose of, I would be pleased to hear from them.

Thanks for your wonderful site. Can you add some info for me? I also attended Claremont St Methodist Church Sunday School for about 10 years, and I used to sing in the choir there. I remember we used to rehearse at Clive Hilton's place. The big events of the year were the Sunday School Anniversary and Guy Fawkes night with fireworks at the Hiltons. At Mellor St School, I was friends with Margaret Elkington (in the infants), Christine Sibson, Gail Payne and there were three of us called Elaine in the class. I remember Mrs. Handscomb in the infants and Mr. Sharman and Mr. Clarke in the junior school. A very memorable occasion was when Standard IV went to Chester for the day. I still have the worksheets! At Alderman Newton's my nickname was Wobby, and I was in III Alpha before I left. I still have photos taken at London Rd Station with a whole group of friends (Pauline, Elaine, Smiggy, Ruth, Tappo, etc.) before I tearfully boarded the train. I would love to hear from them again. My contemporaries were Geoff Davies, Fluff Bowman and Co. I rode once at the Isle [of Man] and scared myself to death on a MV Agusta 500 4cyl. But by far my real love has been the sea or rather under the sea being with the then infant BSAC. A Leicester member of course, we practiced with our home made regulators at the Vestry Street swimming pool.
