E-mail:
My Dear Old Friend Tim,
I was told of your website by a friend of mine who heard you in an interview some months ago, and stopped by the roadside to write down the details. You may remember him as a friend of mine and my brother called Chris Wade who lived just down the road at (I think) no. 24 Needham Avenue. That same night, I logged on to the site and, with my wife Lesley, was just frankly overcome with emotion and came away. The sad death today of George Harrison has brought all of our times from the sixties back into focus, and I wonder if you remember turning up on my parent's doorstep, sometime during early 1963, to announce the 'new direction' for our group as influenced by the emergence of what can only ever be described as the best of the best - The Beatles. This E-mail is heavily influenced with nostalgia and red wine, but I am truly delighted to know that you and Doug are well and happy in North America. You will be sad to know that just one week ago I paid a visit to Glen Hills Primary to find it totally boarded up. I parked my car and walked for the first time in probably more than forty years around the playground, where we had our slides, and around those incredibly familiar buildings. Unfortunately, I was unable to gain access, but on enquiring at the local play school (which is situated on the right at the bottom of the field by our old canteen). I was informed that our dear old school is to be demolished. So much is changing, Peewit Hollow, as you are probably already aware, has been filled in, but you will be pleased to know that the remains of Singleton's milking parlour (the farm on the far side of the railway bridge at Peewit Hollow) stands proud and erect to the memory of Betty Singleton, who gave us rides up and down Peewit Lane to collect/deliver her milk churns, which were left at the site of the old log by the pigsty at the top of Cork Lane... I could go on and on but am again getting emotional, I wish you and yours, on this sad day, love and best wishes, fond memories of many things...
Editors Comment:
I have been trying to find Dave ever since I started this website two years ago. He and I go back a long way. To our infant school days at Glen Hills in fact. We were later both members of the 60's rock group "The Foursights" along with fellow Glen Hills lads Doug Abbott (also found through this site) and Bill Coleman (still as allusive as ever). Dave and I also somehow survived the "motor cycle years." I include his E-mail in the guest book as an encouragement to all who are seeking old friends, acquaintances, school chums and even relatives. A great day for me indeed.

Lutterworth Grammar School 1950-1957. Wife: Betty (nee Root) was also at LGS. Are there any of our classmates out there?
Added from E-mail:
Since receiving your email in response to my registering with Friends Reunited, my wife Betty (nee Root) has been struggling to put a face to your name. She too went to Glen Hills primary school 1942-50 (lived at 44 Grange Drive) then on to Lutterworth Grammar School. Where did you live in Glen Hills and when were you at the primary school? I think you must be somewhat younger as the date of your attendance at Guthlaxton indicates. Perhaps you knew my wife's brother Kenneth who also went to that secondary school? Ken attended Glen Hills primary school from about 1950 to 57, then Guthlaxton 57 to 62 when he emigrated with his parents to Australia. Betty's other brother, Brian, was at the primary school somewhere in between. I wonder if you knew/remember any of them? Incidentally, what a wonderful way to begin your website - "Ey Up Me Duck." We were helpless as we often talk to each other in broad Leicestershire. I have a cutting from the Leicester Mercury from years ago which lists many of the common Leicestershire expressions. Phrases such as: Gizzarfonitt; Wotsup; Aya masht miduck; Aya gorrer weeya; Yowl koppitt; It wur gen mi; Oo worree wee; Ezeesedowt; Wigorn ev us dinnaz; Worritid; Aintitot; Ennit cowd. Translations are available, but I'm sure they are not required.Editor's Comment:
Well I need a translation. Me Mum and Dad didn't let me talk Leicester when I was growing up. It was considered very infra dig' (not top draw). Ah, ha, now I have the translations:
A translation of the phrases of Leicestershire dialect: Gizzarfonitt - give us half of it;(695)

Thanks for your e-mail... You presumably picked this up through the Lutterworth Grammar School site. I don't know whether or not you are aware of the fact that we have in fact met through our parents many moons ago when the Evans used to live in Glen Hills. I believe your mother's name was Stella but my memory does not extend to recalling your father's first name [George]. You were more a friend of my elder brother David who also now lives in Canada whilst our younger brother Chris lives in Leicester. At the present time I am working in Eritrea - I arrived on my second short-term input yesterday and will be staying here for three weeks before going back to stay with Chris over Christmas. I expect to be back in January for a longer stay. I presently don't have direct access to the internet and have to make do as and when I can scrounge the use of a computer. At the moment I am in the World Bank office in Asmara. When I settle down for a month or so I will get myself registered with an ISP and maybe register also with your Leicester site although it is 40+ years since I left for Africa and only have family there now. Take care - and all the best...
Editor's Comment:
This was actually received by E-mail, but I wanted to include it to show the system working (for contacts that is). I actually heard from David Evans (mentioned above) through this web site and one correction: I was a friend of Christopher (in the late 1940s) not David - Ed. Alan was at Lutterworth Grammar until 1958.

Hi whomever. Just been reminiscing about some fantastic times and old friends that I had whilst going to school in Wigston Magna (Guthlaxton College 1982-86). I now live in London where I work as logistics director for pret a manger. I spend most of my time here but still getting back to Leicester quite regularly to see my folks and play cricket for Leicester taverners. I still play football, though the game seems to be much faster (or Ive got much slower). still single despite a few close shaves and optimistic that one day Ill catch up with my twin brother who is married with 3 kids! What an interesting site! Your entries of my school days for Roundhill and Loughborough College of Arts looks about right (40s); seems centuries ago... Apparently I was not a 'happy camper,' i.e., I did not settle well in schooling so moved around (Henson's Primary - wet the toilet seat so was dismissed!; Birstall Jr (was thrashed by the principal Mr. Smith for misbehaving); Quorn Grammar (Rawlins?) - almost chucked out of that school; Roundhill Sec. Mod., Loughborough College of Art, then ran away to sea for few years. Bought myself out of a Commission (RN), attended night school in N. London whilst doing full time work; saved up, entered Manchester University gained my B.A., Ordained to Ministry (Methodist), worked parishes; returned to University (London) gained L.Th., Priested, entered parish work; came with family to Canada, worked on study of Juvenile Delinquency for the Ontario Provincial Judiciary and presented results to Judge Golden. Responded to request from Child and Family Services of Central Manitoba to work alongside that agency and RCMP in investigations into child abuse and subsequent court procedure. After 13 yrs of that retired, licensed by Bishop of the Diocese of Rupert's Land to continue my priesthood as an Honourary Ass't to local incumbent. Married in UK, 4 children all now professionals in Canada. Married 2nd time and have 16-year old daughter. Am aged 71 and still going strong!

Wow where to start: I was born in Yorkshire in 1962 moved to Cyprus because my father was in RAF. I have 2 sisters and a brother. In Cyprus I went to Akrotiri Primary school and then moved on to St Johns. I remember a girl called Joanne Sadler would love to hear from her. I also met up again with her when we moved back to England and I went to school in Peterborough at Arthur Mellows Village College. I only went there for 1 year (1973/4). We then moved to Wigston, where I went to Bushloe to do the last year there [1976]. Would love to hear from anyone who can remember me. I then went to Guthlaxton for 2 years [76-78] and still see lots of people I went to school with. I am now married to a Wigston lad David Eassom. He is 2 years older than me, so if anyone can remember him, you can contact him at my E-Mail address. We have 2 daughters who now both go to Bushloe. After having 1 or 2 jobs, I now work at Bushloe myself and probably see your children without knowing it. Love to hear from you soon.

I lived in Wigston and South Wigston until I left home and went to Basset Street Infants, Parkland, All Saints (Wigston Magna), Abingdon and then Guthlaxton - which I left in 1985. Since then I have lived and done many things including getting a BA Hons in Fine Art. Complicated I know and to be honest I am not sure which name I used at each school though I know I was Jayne at Abington High School because there were two Elizabeth Dodsons in my form then. I lived in Groby until I was ten and went to Groby Infants and then the Martinshaw Lane school which was the Junior School. We then moved to Wigston Leics. and I lived there until I married. I was at Abington High School 1970-1972 and then Guthlaxton Grammar( which changed to Guthlaxton College) until 1974 or 75 . I can't remember many names from schooldays except Susan Bass Catherine Hall , David Curtis, Stephen Hall, No that's it the rest are too sketchy. I would love to contact anyone who remembers me . I was born in America, but my mother grew up in Leicester, on Braunstone Estate, 19 Wyville Row. Her name is Maureen Madder. Her mother, Lilian, died recently, living in Eyres Monsell right up until her death at the age of 83. Mom's brother, Jeff, lives in Aylestone, and Lilian's sister (Aunt Florrie, who I always thought coined "me duck"!) lives at Sutton-on-Sea. Then there's Uncle Arthur - he and Aunt Eve live somewhere in Leicester. My mom was attracted by one of those American soldiers in 1955 and married him in 1956 and has lived in America ever since - I was born just a few months after her arrival in Wisconsin. She's caught up with a few old friends since her mother's obit was in the Leicester Mercury, and has been back to England several times. I was last in Leicester in 2000, and can't wait to get back for my fourth visit in another year or so. I should've been born in England!

Why thank you... Err 'Biff'.... Such a kind, constructive and well thought out comment. I always appreciate constructive criticism like that. I shall change the appearance of my site immediately. By the way, Biff was at Loughborough College of Art and Design (to 1995) and he is currently Senior Interactive Designer for a Design Communication Agency in London. He tells me in a follow-up E-mail that he has spent his life developing a sense of humour. Why do some of my countrymen defend their rudeness as merely being their "sense of humour?" The good news is, he's not from Leicester. One of those rude Northerners I believe.

I love this town!... Anyway, while I lived in Leicester, I worked for IDA, a design consultancy on London Road, and am still in touch with one of my ex-colleagues. I miss going to Tigers home games (no Rugby here) and shopping in the market place and town center and movies at the Phoenix. Hope I haven't prattled on too much :) [not at all - Ed]

I was born in '46 and lived all my Leicester days on Colchester Rd. From Humberstone school, I moved to Spencefield, just after it opened, leaving July '61. My best mates at Spencefeld were Pete Allison and Eddie Everly (Everley) both were fast runners for the rugby team. I was a scrum half and wing threequarter. We nearly got caught one night, up on the roof looking into the girls changing rooms. Finished my apprenticeship at Wadkins and moved to Canada. Three years later, I was back with a Canuck wife, stayed a year and travelled overland to Australia. I got to Bali, Indonesia before they had electricity at Kuta. 18 months later, we travelled on the trans Siberian Railway en route to Canada. Set up home in Vancouver. In '84, I invested my half of the divorce money in a plane ticket to Fiji and crewed on yachts around the S. Pacific, tripped around PNG, Irian Jaya, and spent a year in Indonesia and another in Thailand. Returned to Canada '87. Followed a lady to Japan, stayed three years, then back to take care of my mom (she moved to Canada in '75). Buried dear old mom, then met another Japanese lady and I was back in Japan again. We bought an old farm house and I grow veggies and teach English at a High School. I returned to Leicester for a vacation in '98 and was pleased to see the fields that I used to play in are still fields. My thanks to the city fathers who wrote the laws. I will visit Leicester this December 2001 and would like to hook up with Eddie Everley if anyone can help me I'd appreciate it. Anyone that reads this is welcome to contact me. Thanks for the opportunity to leave a "message" on the bulletin board.

I lived my early life in FILBERT Street and went to Hazel Street Juniors and to Alderman Newton's leaving in 1947 to enter the accountancy profession. During the course of the next few years, I did other things but returned to the profession in 1970 and left Leicester to live in Cornwall to work for KPMG. After taking early retirement, my wife and I decided to get away from the incessant rain of the west country and live in the sunshine of Cyprus, the best move we ever made. Although we still like to visit our friends in Leicester, we think the city has lost so much of it's character. However ,I am a great Tigers' fan and follow their fortunes on the TV and on their web site.

Born and brung up in Barrow-on-Soar and attended the infant and junior schools there. Went to Loughborough College School (now Burleigh Community College) from '61 through '68 - should have left earlier but there were A levels to re-take... Worked as a computer operator in Derby (Rolls Royce) and Nottingham until I left the UK in early 1970, first for Freeport, Bahamas and then for Toronto, Canada, where, with some recent interruptions for work in the States, I've been ever since. Active on the Friends Reunited Site for both the Hall Orchard School in Barrow and Loughborough College Grammar School. Frequent visitor to Barrow - at least once a year for the last 7 years - and always eager to meet up with old chums and chumettes...

I was born in Syston in 1948 on a foggy November evening and lived there until I was 15, when my mum and dad in their wisdom decided to pull us up by the roots and emigrate on the ten pound deal to Australia! I was devastated! Having been thru the Infant School in School Street Syston, and then on to Loughborough College Grammar School, I had known no other way of life. I remember Morris Dancing in the grounds of the vicarage, picking up beech nuts off the ground and eating them and "flying" down the street many mornings to catch the school bus to Lough.Coll. In later years, I traveled a bit and in South Africa met a young man who had in his possession one of the clock faces of the Syston clock tower - can't remember his name! Now living in New Zealand with husband and daughter. Would love to meet any other ex-pats.

I am trying to trace details of my grandfather's life: Laurie Edwards lived in Glen Hills, Glen Parva at 112 Leicester Road. He was born in 1900 in Oswestry (I think). He won the Worlds' half mile in 1920 and was a trainer for Derby County and Leicester City, and, I believe, also for England. Later in the 50s', he bred greyhounds, one winning the Waterloo Cup. Grandad's next door neighbours in Glen Hills were the Earps, Richard and Gil (brother and sister). I was brought up in Narborough and went to school in Enderby (Enderby County Primary school and Enderby Secondary Modern - later Brockington). We moved from Leicester in 1959, and I was sent to "The Willows," a school for girls, for a year. My father worked for Walls' Ice Cream, and his job moved him to Windsor. My mother was Dilys Edwards, grandfather's eldest daughter. Pat Edwards was my Mum's step-sister and was about 19 years younger than Mum. I am trying to piece together his history. My husband and I called at 112 Leicester Road out of the blue in this Summer and met Carol & Graham Juba who now live at number 112. I remembered visiting there as a child. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.
Editor's comment:
As I mentioned in a previous entry (No. 565) my sister Angela used to walk Mr. Edward's greyhounds back in the 50s when she was in her early teens. She was also friends with Pat Edwards (Mr. Edward's step-daughter) who also walked the dogs.

[With regard to writing in all uppercase]: All capitals in anything is considered very rude, almost like shouting at somebody or writing a letter to somebody in red pen. In the writing world, if we want to emphasize something, we use either the bold <b> tag, the italic <i> tag (or use **these**). Not to mention that all capitals does make it a little in your face and not at all pleasant to read. It's over emphasis and you're much less likely to get your point across than if you were subtle and just highlighted that point.

I'm also very deeply into railways and have just returned from a 2-week vacation riding the rails and photographing as many as possible. The railway paintings are superb, and I must get in touch with the artist. I think he may have taught either or both French and English. I have been looking for MIchael Wade for 25 years over here in North America. He lived on Mornington Street/Baker Street during the war and attended Green Lane Road Infants, he then lived on Uppingham Road and went to Wyggeston Boys, while he was at Cambridge he played rugby for the university and Leicester Tigers.
