I have been living in New York for 5-1/2 years. I'm a journalist and I am news editor for a trade magazine. I also freelance for different publications and I am writing a novel. I grew up in Melton Mowbray and went to Brownlow Primary School, John Ferneley Secondary School (81-85) and King Edward VII Upper School (85-87). I then went to Rutland College Sixth Form and the University of Hull to study languages. I love New York and have been fortunate to travel all over the States for my job. I do miss England - but not enough to move back.
Added from e-mail:
Thanks for putting this together. Do you enjoy Calgary? I was there 18 months ago and thought it was great - although a little smaller than New York. I had the fortune to meet and hang out with one of your fellow city men, Jamie Clarke, of Everest fame. Regards, Amanda.
Editors Comments:
See, some people from New York like me (refer to entry number 801).

A wonderful site - once I found it again! I live in Canada but am still very much a Leicestershire girl! Went to Shelthorpe School, Loughborough until 1951, then to Woodhouse Eaves (St Paul's) until 1953 - then after ten years in Cyprus did a stint at Coalville Grammar, lived at Glenfield 60/61 - wot larks! I am now a Canadian with a slight Leicestershire accent - interesting. Some influence from the old days shows in my artwork which you can see if you visit NS or have a look at our website.

Lived in Earl Shilton most of my life - Heathfield High 1962-66, Hinckley Grammar 1966-70. Very much involved in the LSSO (Leicestershire Schools' Symphony Orchestra) whilst at school and in various orchestras and theatre pit bands (especially Concordia) till the time I followed my husband over to the US in search of a job in 2000. Very much a cultural desert round here, 50 miles to the nearest theatre and restaurant with a tablecloth! Have started to teach myself the banjo - if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Lived in Hugglescote until 1952 and went to Hugglescote Primary School. Moved to Greenhill Estate, Coalville - attended King Edward VII Grammar School until 1961. Worked at Caterpillar Tractor Co in Desford until 1964, and then I emigrated here. Does anyone remember the old Rex and Regal Cinemas? Going to the Big C on Saturday mornings when a youngster; there was always a cartoon followed by a cowboy flick. How about Saturday nights dancing at the Coalville Grand or Sundays at the West-end? I have been home many times - it looks pretty much the same but a lot of the old hangouts have disappeared. Would love to hear from anyone who grew up there in the late 50's to early 60's. Yes my father was a coal miner!

First let me say I like your site. I was born and lived in Ellistown untill I was 8 years old and then moved to Greenhill estates near Coalville. Went to Coalville Grammar school on Forest Road and left at 16yrs to take an apprenticeship with Herbert Morris in Loughborough. Graduated as a mechanical engineer in 1964. Worked at Palitoy in Coalville (remember Action Man, Tressy and Tiny Tears, I made them) and emigrated to Canada in 1974, where I was plant manager of a plastics company. I am now retired and pursue my hobby of woodworking. We have a 30 acre wooded lot so I cut down trees for my hobby and for fire wood. Keeps me busy and fit. We try to get to England as often as possible for pint, pork pie and steak and kidney pie. Not forgetting a slice of Stilton and black pudding. I would like to hear from any one from school or Morris's or anyone one interested in woodworking. David

You don't know me, but my best pal, Melv Whale, and I used to love your band The Primates. And I still have The Foursights' record "And I Cry." - somewhere. We used to go to Blaby Social Centre whenever you played there on Saturday Nights. Well - usually only until about 9.30 pm when they closed the dance when fights broke out. Kids from Whetstone again! Melv still lives in Blaby - same house, same wife. I live near Teignmouth in Devon - third wife - now - thank god - happily married! ...Melv and I did start a group - The Denhams (!) - and we were crap. Debut - again at the Social Centre Church concert with "Blowing in the Wind." My cousin, Shirley, and her pal used to also sing with us - Beatles songs. Melv went on to sing lead for The Seven Seas - and he was very good, in a falsetto sort of way. Anyways - I just LOVE your site. Nostalgia is my only sin now. And I do "know who you know" in some ways. Like Lynne Blick lived near us. (We lived on the Lutterworth Road near Grove Road and Western Drive). And I guess you knew Maggie Atkins and Sally Darker. Melv NEARLY went out with Maggie - and DID go out with Sue Hackney. That fan mail you got from a Marita Marbrook on your site mentions her. Where is Sue Hackney? Last I heard she was an air hostess (many years back)? Her elder sister was out of our league - but a babe for all that! Well - I won't bore you with my life story - but congratulations on your site - places like Peewit Hollow and such I remember too. And those GREAT rock and roll evenings at The County Arms! We were indeed blessed to have lived in those times. Best wishes. John.

Hello there. Seems like a great Idea. I am pretty new to Canada. Came here on 24th July 2001 and am waiting on my immigration papers at the moment. I was born in Countesthorpe and went to the local schools including the infamous Countesthorpe College, which was great!!! I played football all over the county for various clubs, but had the best of times with Magna 73 as the team was filled with old school buddies. It'd be great to hear from some Brits over here and even better I guess, if they were from Leics. I worked for various companies, but the last 7 years, I worked for Sturgess Toyota in Aylestone, which I have got to say was a great laugh., The best job ever. Really not at all like working. Anyway, that's enough about me. I hope to hook up with some Ex-Pats. [Schools: Leyland High (to 1977) and Countesthorpe Community College, Winchester Road, Countesthorpe (1977-1981)].

Hi. I was born in Leicester at the Fosse Road South Nursing Home, October 1943. My first years were spent in Ashford, Kent, then I attended Earl Shilton C of E Junior School from the age of 6 when we moved back to Earl Shilton after my father was de-mobbed. Passing the 11+ after 4 years, I attended Hinckley Grammar School from 1954 to 1958. My first job was an apprenticeship at Bostock and Barsby in Barwell. Then a short spell at Bluebird Hosiery, working shifts making nylon stockings. We lived first in Station Road, Earl Shilton, then moved into a new house at Alexander Avenue. My Gran Goodman and Aunt Pauline have lived in Mill Lane, Earl Shilton for over 65 years. Unfortunately, my Gran has just passed away on Xmas day, 3 days short of her 101st birthday. My Aunt Maureen still lives in Earl Shilton and my sister lives in Desford. I can remember learning to ride my first bike with the neighbour's son, Bobby Heard, in Almeys Lane where my Great Gran Nichols lived (Barton Cottages, just in front of Grewcocks' House). The circuses on the 'Top Recce' up from the Hollow. Collecting bullrushes from the sandpit, catching bullies with Chris Sturgess down at the creek in the paddocks over the main Leicester Road. Later graduating to the "Stute" in Shilton for a game of snooker, or the "Ball Hall" in Hinckley. Banners Cafe and the George Ballroom, or the Troc? in Leicester, or the Bowling alley in Coventry. Around 1959/60, I left to spend two rather interesting years in London, returning to Earl Shilton and getting married in Hinckley. Within 6 months we had embarked on a six year odyssey of travel around Europe, North Africa, Asia and up to Iceland, using Guernsey as a summer base and moving on down to Bordeaux for the grape vintage each year. In 1971, we arrived in New Zealand with 2 children and a job in Wanganui. 31 years later, a second marriage and a total of 6 children and 3 grandchildren, I'm happily based in Hawkes Bay, on the sunny east coast, selling Real Estate.

Was a football ref - fully qualified at age 13, and refereed in local Leicester Football circles, until 1976. I'm trying now for many years to get in touch with an old service pal. We were together in RAF Changi, Singapore in the late fifties. I have had no success through the many ex-service web sites but suddenly remembered the friend I wish to contact had a brother who was pretty famous on films, TV, etc. The boys were born in Camden Town, London, but, from an early age, lived in Leicester and went to school there. My friends name is Ron Melia, younger brother of Joe Melia, remembered by many for some very good films. I shall leave my e mail details [email protected] - hope this will help. I'm retired now and live in Spain and Portugal where I have grandchildren. The remainder of the time, I'm in Bournemouth, England.
Editor's Note:
Joe Melia, ex-City of Leicester Boys Grammar school lad, was born over a barber shop in Camden Town, London in 1935 and later attended City Boys during the early fifties. He is a stage, film and television actor who has appeared in many BBC productions.

I put a message out (#188) looking for Lizzie Locker and eventually I was contacted by someone in Australia who said she might know Lizzie's mother. As a result I was given Lizzie's email address and gave her quite a shock when I emailed her after 40 years. I still live in Leicester and Liz lives in Wales now. We have been communicating since about May of this year, thanks to your website and to the very kind lady in Australia. We finally exchanged addresses for Christmas cards and would you believe it - Liz's mum lives in the next close to the one I live in. On a sadder note: The main reason I wanted to contact Liz was because I was concerned about Pamela who also went to Medway and Newarke with us. Pamela was very ill by the time I located Liz. Yet despite my efforts they didn't get to see each other or talk to each other before Pamela died of cancer in June 2001, aged 57. I was deeply upset by her death. I don't think you remembered her. Like Liz she loved dancing and music. Thanks so much for helping me find Liz.

I have to say that I a love the Leicester Overseas web site. I found a couple of people that have relatives who lived close to where I grew up. One person is, in fact, the granddaughter of my own grandmother's next door neighbour. Another person is from a family that lived close to us in the Saffron Lane area and he probably went to school with my younger brother. I also came across a few people that married GIs that were stationed in Bruntingthorpe in the late fifties, early sixties. My husband was stationed there from 1957 to 1960. I just love it, I am going to keep going through the names to see how many people I can find from my past. Keep up the wonderful work, happy and healthy new year. Valerie

I arrived in Leicester in 1962 aged 10 yrs. Went to Ravenhurst Road Junior School, then, in 1962, Kibworth Beauchamp Grammar School which then changed to Oadby Beauchamp Grammar School. I left there in 1967, aged 15, and worked in the Midland Bank on Narborough Rd for 7 years. I never missed a home match for Leicester City for 10 years and went to many an away match. I married a Leicester boy, and, when I was 22 (in 1974), we moved here to Australia. We stayed together for 25 years. We are now divorced. I have 2 wonderful sons 21 & 22, and I still work for a bank here in Adelaide. I love walking and keeping fit and the beach.

When I was 11, I won a scholarship to go to Kibworth Beauchamp Grammar School at Kibworth Beachamp. That was in 1961 or 1962. In 1964 or 1965 the school moved to Oadby and became Oadby Beauchamp Secondary School. I left there in 1967. I believe it is now called the Beauchamp College. The school at Kibworth became, I believe, a secondary school. John Deacon [base player for Queen] was in some of my classes at this time, along with Paul Woloff. We had a lot of bands in those days at school, nearly everyone was musically involved. We all used to spend a lot of time at the Launde youth club. Anyway, just thought I would put you right on the Kibworth Schools thingy. I couldnt see any names that I remembered but will keep looking. Merry Christmas Tim
I forgot to tell you that when Kibworth became Oadby Beauchamp Grammar school, it merged with Gartree High School from years 4 onwards, so it became like a senior school, but Gartree still existed for up to years 3. The two schools were side by side at Oadby.

Born and grew up Leicester until age of 15 when Dad decided to emigrate to Cape Town, South Africa. Went to Mayflower, then Crown Hills Secondary (65-68) and was then moved to Collegiate Girls (68-70). Emigrated to Cape Town in 1970 but went back to Leicester about every three years, between bouts in S.A. and in The Hague, Holland. I worked mostly as a secretary, personnel officer or administrator of some kind for about 15 years until I met my husband skiing in Austria! We still ski. I have been married and living in America for the last 15 years. I have two children: Kelly aged 11 and Jonathan aged 13. Although I didn't graduate with anyone in Leicester, I remember my friends from those days very well and regret having lost contact with many of them. Anna Weakley moved to Cape Town 3 months after me and we became best friends. We still are, although she now lives in Cambridge. My stepmother is back living in Leicester, so I do get home occasionally. It would be nice to see some old friends again.

Met husband (Philip), lived in Bournemouth 1960 - 63, Melton Mowbray (63-70), Northampton - 4 different addresses (70- 2000), then we retired to France. Loved wandering around Bradgate Park, the old part of Leicester - Cathedral, Jewry Wall, etc and the museums - remember the giraffe's head sticking through the ceiling in the New Walk museum? Dad was born in Sapcote - it is or was, full of Browns. Went to lots of symphony concerts in De Montfort Hall, usually sitting behind the orchestra in the cheapest seats. Worked for many years in Northampton annexe of Leicester University (same organisation as Vaughan College).

I lived in Leicester all my life up until April this year when I was sent on a training course with my company (Ingersoll Rand). I liked it so much I asked for a job over here. I had an apartment and car even before I had my final salary package. I started school at Ravenhurst, then to Winstanley and finished at Bosworth college in 1979. I married at 21 but unfortunately that did not work out. I started work in engineering but ended up as a salesman for air compressors for the last 12 years. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. Hey Milan is a great place to visit during the summer months which run from April to September/October.

You seem to want a novel in the form of an autobiography, but you will have to accept just some bare facts at least for this time.

I was a pupil at Loughborough College School from 1958 - 1965. Never one of the clever lot, I never the less had a great time at this school. My particular friends were Val Eddowes, Chris Parks, Kate Standley and Cherry Brobyn. I left school and went to work as a Library Assistant at Loughborough Training College, then I moved to the University Library. I married and subsequently had a son and a daughter, and I now work for Leics Libraries at Loughborough Library. I am very involved in local amateur theatre, both plays and musical productions. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me (is there anyone out there?) and has the same memories of Loughborough in the 60's.

Educated wholly within Lutterworth until the age of 18 (lazy or lucky?)1970-1983. Schools: Wycliffe Primary, Luterworth High, Lutterworth Grammar. Then headed off to Sheffield for a HND in Chemistry including two 6-month work placements, firstly at Pedigree Petfoods 1984/5, then Yorkshire Water Authority back in Sheffield. From 1986 to 1989, I studied for a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry at Leicester including a year working for Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Does anyone remember the Macc Lads?? I had a few jars with Mutley and the rest of the band in 1987/8. Still not finished academically (but a bit burned out by that stage), did a PGD in IT at Leicester 1989/90. After a few months of working locally, did a 3 month stint at Welwyn Garden City working for Smith-Kline Beecham Pharmaceuticals (1991). Then moved to Devon in 1991 to work for the National Rivers Authority in Exeter, this has since changed to become the Environment Agency. I now work for the National Laboratory Service which handles all the EA lab work plus ~20% external work as well, in Organic trace analysis, at our new brown field sited laboratory at Starcross. Married to Wendy, 2 girls aged 5 and 2,interests amateur dramatics, quizzes and canal restoration but not necessarily in that order!! I'm also heavily involved in family history research. My family moved from Skegness to Broughton Astley when I was 2. I attended the old, original village primary school, then Lutterworth High School (1976-79) and Lutterworth Grammar School (1979-83). I went onto university (Aberystwyth, then Oxford) and worked in Tunbridge Wells for 2 years before deciding the expat life was for me. My first overseas contract was to the Sultanate of Oman in 1990. Loved it there, and didn't move on until 1997. Then I went to Malaysia. By then, I had obtained NZ residency with a view to finally settling down one day. Returned briefly to Broughton Astley in 1993 to get married, then in 1998 for the birth/christening of my son Craig. Emigrated to NZ in 1999, having visited several times in the preceding years. In good Kiwi tradition (!) bought a waterfront section of land and designed/built my dream home, a short way south of Auckland city. Currently in UK (December 2001) as my husband is terminally ill, but intend to return to Auckland in the future.

Now aged 55. I spent my first years near Humberstone on one of the side-roads off Scraptoft Lane near the old Lido (no longer existent). Moved, aged about 15, to Glen Parva near Wigston and lived on Little Glen Road whilst attending Guthlaxton Grammar School where I gained my A-levels in 1964. Went on to study law in London at Queen Mary College (as it was then known) before graduating and moving abroad to Germany. My family meanwhile moved to just outside Nottingham and later to Chesterfield in Derbyshire. I still have strong emotional ties with Leicester - not least because of fondest memories - old pals, would-be girlfriends (crushes), jazz haunts, Leicester Market and first Stones concert in Silver Street back in the early Sixties. Spent a life in radio & TV broadcasting for the German equivalent of BBC World Service, living mostly in Cologne (30 years), but also in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg (much shorter periods) as well as in Zagreb (then Yugoslavia ) for two years, already active in the media back in the late 60's. After a strenuous 30 years of producing and presenting current affairs programmes on air as a senior editor, I this past summer moved with my wife to her former birthplace Slovenia. Now surrounded by wooded mountains just short distances from Italy, Austria and the Croatian coast with great recreation opportunities - love hiking, mountain-biking and skiing. I'd dearly like to contact friends from the past such as Eric Hansen who was at Humberstone Junior School with me ('53 - '57) when he lived on Colchester Road, Anne Goepel (attended Moat Girls School which she left around 1962) and who lived on Scraptoft Lane at the bottom of Stanley Drive (now married with children and called (I think) Stewart or similar; also Jill Walker from Moat Girls who left around '62 and was a keen ballet dancer and particularly Nigel Austin and Anne Percy who were at Guthlaxton with me. Would love to know what they've "been up to" all these years and perhaps exchange photos and eventually meet-up. I still have family in UK and get back every now and again. Anyone from the County Youth Orchestra (I played first clarinet around 1962-64) who remembers me I'd also be delighted to hear from - my email address is simple enough. Brian Harrison - nostalgic former Leicester-lad.

I was born in Glenelg, South Australia to my English parents, Roger and Glenis, who then emigrated back to the UK before I could even crawl. We moved back to Syston where I was brought up until I was ten years old. I attended Merton Primary from about 1977 until 1983 at which point we moved to Glen Parva where I spent my final Primary year at Parklands (1983-84). Then I moved to the big school (South Wigston High, 1984-87) where I spent three happy years playing tennis ball football trying desperately to keep the ball down so we didn't smash too many windows. Following that, GCSE's were the order of the day and I went to Guthlaxton College where I did them followed by A levels between 1987-91. An aborted attempt at Uni (Newcastle 1991-92) was followed by a year working for a surveying company (GEONEX) based in Barwell but working almost entirely on the M1 for a proposed road widening which still hasn't happened. That done, I went to Leicester Uni between 1993-96 and emerged with a geology degree that got me a job with Enterprise Oil as a petrophysicist in their London head office. I'm still with Enterprise but have recently moved to the Stavanger office in Norway where I will spend about a year before re-locating once again to Aberdeen. My younger brother Jason can be found at entry 690, so our parents are delighted that they now get to see neither of us very often.
