G,day Guys. I attended Hazel St Junior school 1945 (?) until 1951, then on to King Richard III until 1956. A 5-year apprenticeship followed @ English Electric (Whetstone). Then followed 15 years in the Merchant Navy. In 1981, I emigrated to South Africa, but that only lasted three years, then on to New Zealand where I've found what peace is. They don't call it God-Zone for nothing. My wife Trisha and I are mad keen Rock & Roll dancers ,and we wow them all each week at the local clubs.

I reside in Leicester, NC which is located in Buncombe County and is located ten miles from Asheville, NC. Leicester was named for Leicester Chapman a native of England. He married a lady by the name of Sarah Carpenter. They had a large family. Leicester, the town or village, was named for "Lester" about 1850 when he and his brother-in-law, John Carpenter started a "stand" in the area. Am I reaching a site in England? Can you help me with Leicester Chapman?

Editor's Comment:

Another Leicester in the USA. This makes the 4th to my knowledge. The others are in Massachusetts, Virginia and New York State. According to the above website: "Some years before the Civil War a settlement on Newfound Creek in the northwestern part of Buncombe County, North Carolina was named, in honor of Leicester Chapman, a naturalized Englishman engaged in merchandising at the place, Leicester. To the public, however, it soon became somewhat jocularly known as "Lick Skillet" or as "The Skillet". Even yet the name of Leicester is pronounced by many people in the neighborhood just as it is spelled and not as the English pronunciation of "Lester" would have it. The town was incorporated on February 9, 1874; but, the act of final incorporation was repealed March 2, 1905." I am not clear from the foregoing if 'Leicester' was from Leicester.

Hi. I used to live in Cold Overton Road, Oakham Leics. I was the AA patrolman covering the A1 area from about April 1976 to April 1986. Left to semi retire in London, were Haze,l my wife, worked a 20-hour week for a bloody fortune with a car & all sorts provided. I had a great time working for and with other staff members in the Automobile Association at Carrow Road: Dick Simpson, Dick Weatley, Kieth Millard, Pete Thornhill and some idiot called Bart, but mostly great men to be associated with. Any old pals out there? Also at RAF North Luffenham 1966 to 1969. Any old pals still around? Lived in Spain for a while after fully retiring at 54. Lost touch with the following: Tony Baker, Oakham; Bert Fitches, Oakham; George Sheasby, Oakham and a few others.

Foursights drummer. I left my heart in the Glen Hills Memorial Hall.

Editor's Comment:

David and I go way back. We became friends when I was in my last year at Glen Hills (1956) and David was one year behind me. We both took piano lessons with a Mrs. Tarry who would elbow you in the ribs when you played a wrong note. Happy days. Later we were both in the 60s rock group "The Foursights," and, around about that time, both motorcycle mad. And 'mad' being the operative word. How we survived those days I don't know. At one time we were rivals for the same gal, Val Pretty, from Blaby. David and I fell out on numerous occasions but the demise of our group was the most trying time. Great to hear from you David. One thing though: You always had so much more to say in the old days.

I was born in May 1940 and lived almost half my life in Glen Hills, Glen Parva. I started life in a small bungalow (I think it belonged to the Rudkins) off Hillsborough Rd overlooking the old sand quarry. I have a brother Albert and a sister Shirley. In 1942 our family moved into one of the "Prefabs" at 45 Henray Ave. In 1945, I started school at Glen Hills Primary, left in 1951 and went to South Wigston Secondary (High) School until 1955. Became a Watchmaker (and I still am one). Had my own Jewelry shop in South Wigston. Got married and left England in 1974 for Auckland, New Zealand. I have 2 children, Matthew & Rachel. Lots and lots of memories, but not the room here to write them, would love to share them with anyone from my area and era. Dennis Akers.

Editor's note:

I grew up very close to Hillsborough Road and our house was also owned by the Rudkins (before my Dad bought it from them for for about 300). In fact, we lived right across the Leicester Road (A426) from the Rudkins and, as a lad, I used to take the rent money (1 per week) to their 'Mansion'. Well it looked like a mansion to me - it was certainly a very large house with grounds to match. It was in these same grounds that the "Saxon Princess" - now in the New Walk Museum - was found.

Added by E-mail:

In your Email you said that you could not remember the sandpit off Hillsborough Road. I may have misled you a bit there as access to our bungalow - that was close to the edge of the sandpit - was via Hillsborough Road. One had to go up Hillsborough Road from the Lutterworth Road, then turn right into Featherstone Drive. At the end of Featherstone Drive was a large wooden gate that lead into a field and in the right-hand corner was a white bungalow; this was close to the edge of the sandpit, and I believe this was where the Saxon "Glen Parva Lady" was found. It was also behind the Rudkin's House. A few days after you entered my details on your site I received an email from Pat Bailey, now Pat Greenwood, who lives in Canada. Her parents and my parents were good friends in the 1940s and1950s. Her mother still lives in the same house in Hillsborough Road. We are now in the process of exchanging e-mails, all thanks to you and your website; good one Tim. Also in your email you suggest that I may like to write an article for the Memory Lane section of your site. Yes, I would like to put in writing memories of "My life in the Prefabs," as this was a very special time in my life with many vivid memories. This may take me some time to complete as I am quite busy at the moment. I will have to do it a bit at a time, but when it's complete, I will send it to you for your evaluation. Well thanks again Tim, I will  be visiting your site often. All the best for now.

Well here's a little bit about me: I was born in Market Harborough some 36 years ago and lived locally in Leicestershire and Rutland, going to school at the Ridgeway Primary, Welland Park, Robert Smyth (1979-1982) and Oakham schools. I worked in Harborough at Harbilt Electric Vehicles when I first left school and then onto Crosby Valve where I stayed for a few years as secretary to the Sales & Marketing Director. Left Crosby to work for Carter Production really enjoyed this job but once again moved onto King Trailers for 2/3 years. Got married in September 1992 to Andy Hoxley just prior to the big market crash and 15% interest rates! A sign of things to come... I hope not. In the summer of 1993 left Kibworth bound for Bahrain where we planned to work for 12 months. Three years later we moved onto Dubai, and 2 children later here we still are enjoying the sunshine and tax free status. We get back home once or twice a year to catch up with as many friends and family as possible. Might see ya then!

We Emigrated to Australia in 1947 from Leicester when I was 6 years old. We lived at 1 Dundonald Rd, Leicester just prior to leaving. Before that we resided at "Bernor" Wavertree Drive, Melton Rd. My father, Albert George Slater, was an engineer at the British United Shoe Machinery Co. which I believe has since closed down. My mother, now 90, is Elinor Slater nee Bithell. My grandfather, John Bithell, was an engine driver in Leicester. Both grandparents came to Australia with us in 1947. The only other people I remember are Billy Baken? and Jean Pole. My wife and I will be visiting Leicester in June to do some family research and touring. We will be arriving at St. Margaret's Bus Station, Gravel St. I wonder if anyone knows a reasonable hotel in that locality? This is my first visit to England since leaving in 1947. My relatives in England are cousins in Bournemouth and Kent, who we will be visiting during our stay. So, any advice or assistance would be most welcome. Regards, Richard Slater, Sydney, Australia

Hello Tim. I lived at no 25 Needham Ave; whereas, David Lindsay [Foursights' member] lived just up the road at number 15. I acted as your road manager on several occasions. Do you remember the gig in Rugby and afterwards we all went back to Clifton Hall and the guy who ran the pirate radio station in the Thames Estuary (forget his name but he was murdered later for pinching the crystal out of the transmitter) tried to sign you to join his pop stable (his wife had a monkey that kept jumping on my head!)? I live in Leamington Spa with my second wife, Kathy of seventeen years (that's how long we have been married not her age) Kathy is 45 (I'm a child snatcher if there ever was one). We have two Children, Lauren 13 going on 21, who knows everything, and we nickname her Kevin after Harry Enfield's character. Lauren is at Princethorpe school and lives her life either at the end of a mobile phone or on the computer messaging with MSN. Our second child is Joseph who is 10 and goes to Arnold Lodge school, he has just passed his common entrance exam and been accepted for Warwick Public school. He is also sitting the exam to go to Rugby. Looks like I will be a pensioner before the school fees stop!! Joe's interests are Computer games, Computer games, Computer games. I run a group of companies in Training, Management Consultancy and Hairdressing. Also, an internet company called, yes you have guessed it, "Lookfantastic.com." look it up sometime, it's the leading retailer of hair products in the world. We have a warehouse in Sussex with a team of packers working all hours sending parcels around the world. I have two older children from my first marriage we call them the "Blue Peter Children," you know, "these are the ones I made earlier." The eldest is Daniel who is 27 and lives with his Girlfriend, Anastasia, in Ilford in Essex. Daniel is a Science teacher and is head of year eleven Daniel's ambition is to be headmaster by the age of 30. Next is Tanya who is 23 and lives with a crowd of girls in Plymouth. Tanya works in a company designing web pages. Pic included of Tanya and Daniel. [Martin's Schools: Glen Hills Primary (to 56) and Kibworth Beauchamp Grammar (56-60)].

Editor's Comment:

I must have a bloody awful memory not to remember a monkey jumping on someone's head. Anyway, the above was forwarded to David Lindsay, ex-Foursights member and long-time childhood friend, and he replied thusly:

E-mail:

Martin was the hairdresser with the gorgeous, tall girlfriend Anne, result, a little later on, 'Martanne' hair salons in Rugby, etc. The gig to which he is referring is the one at the Benn Memorial Hall in Rugby where we shared (bottomed) the bill with none other than The Fortunes and Gullivers Travellers. Afterwards we went, as Martin remembers, to the large country house of the promoter Mr. King, and I'm almost certain the radio station concerned was  Radio London. Don't you remember we opened a door in that house and there sat Rory Storm with a guitar and a record player?

Comment:

Lord help me but I don't remember a thing. Was I even there?

G'day there everyone. Well I have lived here in Australia since November 5th 1969 and am coming back to Leicester for a short visit later on in the year. I would like to make contact with a couple of old school mates, so if anyone knows either Sara Eagleton (as she was known then) or a Diane Clifford (nee Collins) I would be really grateful. I left South Wigston High (as it was known then) in 1966/67 - bad memory there... Since arriving here in Oz, I have worked on wheat and sheep properties, got married, had three children and two and a half grandchildren. Got divorced, but not silly enough to get re-married. The last 12 yrs, I have been running a small bus charter business, which has taken up most of my time, but have recently sold it. So now as a lady of leisure (for a short time anyway) I have decided to take a trip back to the UK. So if any of you can remember Helen Dix or know of Sara or Diane it would be great - thanks.

Added from E-mail:

Hi there Tim. Thank you so much for bringing back so many memories for me. It was my first visit to your website and I think it was only by accident that I found it. I was on there for over 4 hours just reading about the black pad, scrumping apples, and finding the trolls from the old troll factory. I lived at 31 Hillsborough Rd [Glen Hills] for 17 yrs so I was the in the next wave of rebels in the area after you... I was born in 1952 and lived in Hillsborough Rd from 1953 to 1969 when we came to Perth in Western Australia. I have never been back, but often thought about my childhood and how different it would be to grow up there now. I had 2 friends that lived on Leicester Rd, Lindsey Kendall and Sara Eagleton who lived in the white bungalow on the corner of Hillsborough and Leicester Road. My first school was Glen Hills infants, but I moved to Rollstone the year it opened. I went on to South Wigston and then Guthlaxton for only one year as I hated it. I got a job working on a dairy farm for Mr Charles Collier opposite the county arms. My dad worked for Easingwoods in Blaby driving trucks. Anyway, I could go on for hours but you know it all anyway... Just thank you so much for giving me some long forgotten memories back it means so much. You have done a fantastic job of this website, keep up the good work. Helen

Hi. I was born in a little village in Leicestershire called Ravenstone in 196*. Went to both Ravenstone primary and Snibston primary schools. Mum moved us to the latter simply because they didn't teach ITA. Went onwards to Ibstock High [1976-1979] followed by Ashby Grammar [1979-1983]. Ok, I left school in 1983 (work it backwards and you'll find out how old I am!) and went to work at the biscuit factory in Ashby de la Zouch - lasted a whole 6 weeks before joining Loughborough Uni as a Library Assistant. Onwards to Fisons (later Astra Zeneca) before heading off to Perth WA (emigrated in 1996), and a career in the library industry. She who was least likely to succeed heads a staff of 3 and looks after more than 300 contractors who need to find jobs in the library and records management industries. Married, now divorced, 2 children, and I think that's about it for now.

Hello me ducks!! I am a former Leicester gal living in Alaska. I left Leicester in 94 after meeting and marrying a US Air Force chap. We moved to RAF Croughton for 3 years then went to Tokyo, Japan for 4 years, then last year (Sep 2001) moved to Alaska. My family are all still in Leicester and I miss them too flippin' much. We have 3 great children here though! 2 girls and a boy. I went to Gartree and Beauchamp schools in Oadby and left in 1993. I lived in Evington, then Bushby, then after my first marriage, moved to a terraced house off Belgrave Rd (Cost 13, 500 pounds...is that funny or what???!!!). I wish these US computers had pound signs...AAARGHHH! (yes I WAS shouting then) I miss England so much. The countryside has to be a huge miss thing...the sense of humour another...sarcasm HERE is a 4 letter word! (yeah yeah...I know it has 7 letters but you know what I mean!) I do however love the friendliness here. I love Wal-Mart and craft shops. I have got into scrapbooking BIG time! I love this site! Thanks so much for it. I come here when I am missing the lingo, my heritage, etc. I wasn't very patriotic until I moved away from England; now I have Union Jacks up and rave about England to anyone who will listen (and you know Americans and their obsession...oops I mean love, of anything "British"). I enjoy my accent and all the interest I get! I tend to "overdo" it when I speak to people. Put on my "telephone" voice!!! OK so I enjoy the attention...pathetic. Well that is all for me for now! Ta-ra for now! Jo PS I use my maiden name here so I don't get any whackos (now that is a fun US word!) after me!

I attended the Girls Grammar School in Ashby de la Zouch from 1960 to 1967, although I'm really a Derbyshire lass from over the border in Swadlincote. I have lived in sunny Brisbane in Australia since 1974. I work at the University of Queensland and have a teenage daughter who is currently a third year Uni student. My maiden name was Pauline Stirland. One of my major interests is family history and I have discovered that parts of my family travelled to South Derbyshire via Nottingham and Ibstock in Leics. My daugher and I are currently transcribing the 1891 census for the Castle Donington/Shardlow area.

Added from E-mail:

Hi Tim, The boys school was just called "Ashby Boys Grammar School." It had been in existence for much longer than the girls school which started in the early part of the 1900s. In the 60s, those of us just over the border in Derbyshire, could go to either the Ashby grammar schools or Burton on Trent high schools if we passed the 11-plus exam, since we didn't have a local "academic" type school.  We weren't given a choice, we were just allocated to one or other of the schools.  After I left, the Ashby grammar schools became 14-plus entry and so all kids in Swadlincote and surrounding areas went to the local comprehensives. Cheers, Pauline

I have lived on Vancouver Island, British Columbia since 1952. I am married with 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Last visited Leicester 2 years ago. I have a brother that I have lost touch with and I think he is still in Leicester, and I would love to hear from him. His name is John and he has a wife and two children as far as I know. He can reach me at 511 Rosehill Street Nanaimo BC Canada V9S 1E7, email [email protected]... If anyone in Leicester knows John please get the message to him. It is sad to lose touch with your siblings. I have not met a lot of Leicester people on the Island so if there are any out there I would love to hear from you. I married a Geordie, though we met in Canada.  This is a nice site and I am bookmarking it to keep in touch with my roots. By the way, John can also phone me at 01-250-753-4897 (but don't forget the time change). I do get to follow Leicester City football over here. Frank Graves

Added from E-mail:

Thank you for listing the fact of my losing touch with my brother John. I wrote the information yesterday (Jan 31) and you asked me to give his age and wife's name (my brother John that is)  He is in his late 50's (do not know exactly is child number three I am the oldest and now 65) his wife's name is Judy and as far as I know he drives a lorry  (used to anyway) I got an email already from someone who looked in the phone book and gave me two address and one phone number. I will give it a  try and let you know if I am successful. We have a son in Calgary - he installs alarm systems. We plan to visit him in the Fall. When I have the dates, I will for sure let you know. Have been reading some of the bulletin board messages and some interesting stories. I used to attend Fosse Boys school which was formerly called Mantle Road. Thanks again for the help to locate my brother.

I was born in Welford, Northants but attended the Grammar School in Market Harborough (now Robert Smythe School). The village of Welford has three boundaries - Warwickshire at the top end; Northants in the centre and Leicestershire in the south. I do not, therefore, qualify as a Leicstershire expat other than through my school years. I came to Spain in 1964 and lived in the capital, Madrid, until 1977 when we moved 50 kms out to Guadalajara. I own and run a Language and Computer Technology Academy, where I teach English to Spanish children and adults. I am also a mother and grandmother and am very happy with all my roles. I would like to find someone to chat with. I used to live in Gaddesby and Barsby and now live in a beautiful Burgundy village with a magnificent wine cellar under the house. I should have retired years ago, but I doubt whether I shall ever stop work being more and more in demand. Anyway, the older you get the more there are pretty girls in the population.

Hi all. We emigrated to Australia in Jan.1983 and have never been back - as yet. Here are a few facts about myself and family: I attended Humberstone Junior School (left 1953) then Moat Boys School (left 1958). Married Madeline Hart (ex Moat Girls School to 1958) in 1965 and we have two daughters Amanda and Kerry and also now have two Grandkids. I played rugby for Moat Old Boys until they disbanded (still have my jersey and many fond memorys) and then went on to play for Oadby Wyggs until 1982. On leaving school in '58, worked in the Income Tax office with Bing and Hendo (still remember the days off: Ansells bitter, pies, darts and snooker all on the same day). Gave away the Public Service in 1963/64 and joined Mick and Len at Haddon-Costello where I stayed for 18 years, resigning (with a certain measure of sadness) in 1982 to emigrate to a new life 'Down-Under'. We've had many ups and downs but no regrets. We love the lifestyle, climate, and wide open spaces. I could write a book, but will stop there for now. PS. does anyone remember the Clocktower in Humberstone Gate, the Floral Hall, Lewis's Department store, Palaise de dance, Trocedero cinema, lido swimming pool, the tram shelter near Humberstone Park, etc, etc, etc?

I'm 35 years old and was born in Mkt Harborough where I lived until I was 24 years and the town couldn't cope with me! I currently work as a full time presenter for Dubai TV & Radio and have been a DJ for most of my working career. Back in 89, I deejayed in couple of clubs in Leicester "Harvey's and Gatsby's" - there used to be a club called Mr Kizer's but that was a hole. I studied as a young apprentice at Charles Keene for a 236 electrical engineering apprenticeship from 85 to 88 and spent most of my earnings in a pub called the Griffin. For fun, I used to water ski at a place called Wanlip just off the six hills bypass. The lake still has many pairs of my underpants in it - so I'm told. I have many happy memories of Leicester, but sadly I wont be returning just yet ! I left Leicester at a very young age. I was born in Leicester General hospital to English parents, and three weeks later I was on my way to the States due to my father getting a reassignment at work.  I have periodically been back to visit relatives. Other than that there is not much to tell. I would be interested in meeting other ex-pats in the area that I reside (i.e. Virginia).

I have dipped into the site and find it absolutely fascinating and look forward to reading more at my leisure. I was interested to see where you were brought up - I too was a war baby, but a Little earlier than you - 1941. I lived the other side of Leicester, in Highfields, most of which is no longer there, but I moved to live in Blaby in 1967 and know that area quite well. My children went to school in Blaby. We moved to Scotland in 1975 and have been here in the Highlands ever since, although one of our daughters has since migrated back to Leicester. Invergordon has a connection with Leicester, in as much it was a Leicester guy, Len Wincott who orchestrated the last mutiny in the Royal Navy. I did a bit of research for Invergordon Community Coumcowhen; we were doing a Maritime exhibition. Invergordon has a great maritime history, the port was used a lot during the first world war, but not so much in the second, because of the danger of submarines getting into the firth, especially after the sinking of the Royal Oak at Scapa Flow. Even after we moved here in 1975 the fleet would visit, albeit a very small one, but never the whole fleet. It is my understanding that after the mutiny, the fleet was never allowed to be altogether in one place again. A lot of the older people from Invergordon who have personal knowledge of the mutiny are no longer with us. At that time the pubs were all state owned (not sure how that came about) but I know one person who was in the Naval Canteen at the time of the meeting of navy personnel to discuss the mutiny. To come back to Len Wincott, I think he came from the Catherine Street area of Leicester - I remember getting articles from the Leicester Mercury and I am sure if you contacted them they would be able to help you. We still visit Leicester a few times a year, visiting family and friends and it's true what they say - there's no place like home. [Schools: Moat Girls to 1956]

Editor's Comment:

John Wincott was involved in the Invergordon Mutiny in Scotland in 1931. Later, his experiences in the USSR led to him being imprisoned there where he spent twelve years in one of Stalin's labour camps (1944-56). He died in Russia in 1983. A socialist? From Leicester? I don't believe it. What are the chances of that?

Originally I'm from Lubenham near Market Harborough where my only claim to fame is an article in the Harborough Mail about a sponsored walk I did with my dog when I was about 13. Graduated with Law degree from Southampton University, then joined a Danish shipping company called Maersk. Worked in Felixstowe and London for 2 years before being posted to Shanghai, China where I work as a Logistics Consultant. I would love to meet some other young working people in Shanghai. I can speak Mandarin, but I am much better at English! Favourite Place in Leicestershire: Foxton Locks and any branch of New Look (can't decide whether desire for fresh air or trousers in non-Asian sizes should take precedence). Schools in Market Harborough: The Robert Smyth School (to 1992); Brooke House College (92-94). Hi. Nearly all of my family came from Leicester. I was born in Coventry on 31st December 1938 but used to visit both Grandparents. My Father's were at 19 Noble St. (now demolished) and my Mother's at Clumber Rd. My Grandfather used to work on the Railways there but was invalided out after being kicked by his horse. He used to drink in the Bow Bridge Pub by the canal. There were 11 children (10 brothers, one sister). My Dad's name was Horace Ellis and he played cricket. He worked at Victory Tyres (I went there once) until he moved to Coventry. Most of his brothers joined the Navy. Walter, the youngest, was killed in Tobruk Harbour in 1941. My other grandfather was a photographer; they were the 'Diggle' family. Are there any photo's of Leicester in the 40s, 50s and 60s on the web that I can access? Great site you have. I now live in Cambridgeshire. Best wishes. Malcolm H. Ellis.

I arrived back in Canada with my daughter last Tuesday Jan 15, 2002, and am so sad, my daughter is worse than me, she say's constantly that she would like to emigrate to the U.K. I am so glad for this site, I hope I do hear from all of you, I really feel home sick. Considering I have been away for the last 17 years, it surprises me. I have not been lucky enough to get a job, and people like Leicester yet, there are always lay-offs etc. [?] I miss the working life and all the wonderful people that I worked with in Leicester. I wish I had had a transfer before I emigrated. Please write to me, I would love to hear from the Leicester folks. Have a nice day. Love Leonita

Paul is referring to some of the members of the City team of the early 70s including the great team of the 1973-1974 season: FA-Cup semi finalists, finishing 6th in the 1st Division (the top division back then) and voted most attractive team to watch by the Sun newspaper.

E-mail Comments:

Hello Tim, First of all many thanks for your e-mail and congratulations and thank you for providing this excellent website. It has to be one of the best! I'm telling everyone about it! As to my contact with the early 70's Leicester team: One of my wife's friends from school, June, married Steve Whitworth. One day my wife was in Leicester and she bumped into June. They decided it would be nice to chat about old times and suggested they meet one night and that they brought there "better halves" with them. Suffice it to say, I was gob-smacked when Steve Whitworth walked in. As a long-time Leicester fan (I remember watching them as long ago as the 60's  including the 1961 and 1963 cup finals, etc.) I was thrilled, and when Steve offered me tickets for any of the matches - including tea with the wives at half-time if I wanted it - I gave up going in the Kop and took his seats instead.

I think it was in 1974 that Steve got his first England cap against West Germany at Wembley. I took Steve to London to join up with the squad and he asked me if I would take June to the match - tickets supplied of course. England won 2-0 and by the time Steve got out there was a line of cars to get out the car park and no-one would let my little mini out. Steve got out and went to the next car in the queue and asked if he would let us out! I don't think the guy could believe his eye,s but he let us out after Steve gave him his autograph. On the way home, Steve asked if we were hungry. We stopped at the motorway services and I thought we would be eating there. Instead, Steve rang the casino in Leicester to ask if they could arrange a meal for us. We rolled in about 1 o'clock and the four of us enjoyed a meal which we were given "on the house" as they had been watching the match and were thrilled (weren't we all) by the result. On another occasion we went out for the after-match dinner and that's where we first met 'Birch' (Allan Birchenal), Keith Weller and Stevie Earle. After the dinner, Birch invited us back to Stevie Earles for a game of cards if we could keep up with them. Suffice it to say, with Keith in a Stag and Steve W in a Celica, the mini was flat out! 70mph up the Welford Road. I took them at cards though!  Yes, they were a great team and I feel very privileged to have known some of them personally. That we were ordinary people and yet so readily accepted by them speaks volumes of them as people as well. Great times. Well I hope that answers your question Tim and once again congratulations and thank you. It's a great site!!!

Previously known as Yvonne Shippam, born 1943. Attended Rearsby C of E School, followed by King Edward VII Grammar School, Melton Mowbray. Left Grammar school in 1959. Emigrated to Australia in 1966. Married with 6 children. Recently sold a business I started 9 years ago so "between engagements" at the moment. Studying part time for a BA as a mature age student. Have visited the U.K. many times since emigrating; in fact, I've now seen more of England, Scotland, Ireland & Wales than my siblings who all still live in Leicestershire. See ya!

I lived in Leicester from 1964 to 1986 and would welcome contact with any former friends or colleagues. I lived in Glenfield in the 1960's while going to King Edward VII Grammar (Coalville). Worked as a lab technician in the Hydraulics and Aerodynamics Labs at Leicester University. Spent brief stints at Poole, Lorrimer and Taberrer (PLT), Litton, G Perry and Sons, Marconi Radar Systems (both Blackbird Road and New Parks). I went to Leicester Polytechnic from 1979-1986, initially doing a BSc Elec. Eng and later a PhD (Abdullah Hashim's research group). Finally departed Leicester in 1986 bound for the wilds of Suffolk. I've been in the USA since 1983 and still miss Bradgate Park.

Well it is time I wrote again as the first time I was #7. Tim, I pop in almost every day and have a look to see who has left a message. Just to up date: I was born in Kilby and was raised in Peatling Magna near Countesthorpe. I went to Countesthopre school and then on to Burlington House on East Bond Street in Leicester and then on to Guthlaxton... In 1961 I met and married an American and have lived in many different places. I have 3 grown sons and 3 grandchildren - all living in the States. Would love to hear from anyone that remembers me...

PS: Looking for Margaret Perkins (from Oadby) Jackie Bailey (from Oadby) and Nigel Astill all from Guthlaxton and Penny Broenjohn (from Countesthorpe).

Hi. I lived most of my school years in Melton Mowbray [King Edward VII to 1982]. Started work at Thorn EMI Lighting in Leicester. After a few years, I moved away ending up in Bicester in Oxford. I then joined the Swiss company Huber+Suhner whose main business was in Telecomms. Three years ago I moved to Sweden with the Company and helped start a new manufacturing site. After one year I moved down to Brazil to do the same. Since then I have travelled to China, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, introducing a global management system. I came back to Brazil and will remain here for two + years.

Born and raised in Thurmaston. Attended Roundhill School, left in 1960. Spent many youthful wasted nights (getting wasted) in the Prince of Wales, and Genny Briton. After getting married, moved to Kilby (much fresher air!). Emigrated to USA in 1982. Live in America's oldest city. Have my own cable mapping business. Own a Porsche 911. Any Leicester visitors are welcome to drive it!!

I was reading your bio [My Page] and noted with great interest the Foursights. I remember booking you for one Xmas dance at the, then, AEI Lamps & Lighting on Melton Road, Rushey Fields. It would be either 1963 or 64. Can't remember the year! At that time I was the "Visits Secretary" for the AEI Apprentices and you were recommended by Mick Barrett, who was another apprentice. I believe he knew one of you? I recall we paid you about 500 quid, which was a huge sum back then, but at the annual dance you were worth it in the end.  Too bad, it didn't last, Tim, you could have been a contender!

Editor's Comment:

Thanks Phil, but if you paid us 500 quid, then what happened to the other 490? We never made anything like that back then. Mostly it was a 20s to 25s each for the four of us. And we got bugger-all for the record we made. When can I borrow the Porsche?

Hi. I'm Kevin and I left the good old village of Harby near Melton Mowbray in 1987 to pursue a career in tourism. "What was I thinking?" Anyway, still here in Spain and enjoying it. More than anything, it's the quality of life that I love in Spain. Friendly people and the climate - except July and August - "too bloody 'ot." [Schools: Belvoir High, Bottesford, King Edward VII, Melton Mowbray 1978-1980].

Born Cannon Street 1943. Attended Belgrave Road School then Alderman Richard Hallam till 1953 when my family migrated to Sunshine a Melbourne suburb. Finally left school and joined the Australian Navy for next twenty one years fixing electronic stuff. Got married have two sons (28, & 23). Am now divorced after fifteen years marriage. Now I live in a quiet village near Bowral in the Southern Highlands about, hour and a bit from Sydney. Strangely enough, I was looking up a bit of local history last year and it seems an old Leicester boy is responsible for the discovery of this area. It seems a Dr. Charles THROSBY, born Leicester 1771 and left Leicester in 1802 for the great land down under. He arrived in Sydney as the Surgeon of the prison ship Coramandle. But after being in Sydney a couple of years got the urge to explore. And so he did on numerous trips from Sydney to what is now Canberra, Wollongong, Jervis Bay, Goulburn. Some twenty Kilometres from here he was granted one thousand acres known as Throsby Park near Moss Vale today. As you may have noticed with your maths it is 200 years this year since he left Leicester.

Oh dear... Well isn't that special... By the way, this charming gal was at Loughborough High (78-83) and Melton Mowbray College (83-86). Her second e-mail was even worse and very threatening... I often wondered where the Woolworth's shop girls went when they left.

Hi Tim, Thanks for the email, I am very interested in all this! I have visited Leicester Overseas website - it is brilliant - and have put myself in the guest book.  (Someone has been extremely busy.) ...went to Brownlow Primary and then Melton Grammar School.  Unfortunately, despite the size of our year, there are very few names posted on the Friends United site for those years! I will enjoy my time browsing through the website. Thanks again. Sincerely Gwyneth Smith (Nee Hall).
