Leicestershire Past
and Present: My favourite. This is an excellent
website with well thought-out, interesting, modern and historical articles
about Leicester, the County and the people from there. The originator, Elizabeth Batt, is from Leicester
and now lives in Utah. She has put a lot of care, professionalism and work into the content of her website.

About Leicestershire:
Welcome to this independent site
that's all about Leicestershire, why not try
a virtual tour, check out coming events in
"What's On," or just browse the
pages about the towns and villages of
Leicestershire.

Leicester Research: Max Wade-Matthews is a writer and researcher who has written many books on his adopted city of
Leicester as well as on topics ranging from railways to music. If you would like to learn more about
Leicester's long and colourful history, then check out this most promising new
website. Subjects include the Victorian
Clock Tower, the City's association with King Richard III and "A year
in the life of Leicester: 1836," In
addition, Max is also available
for research projects on almost any subject - especially Local History and
Family History. He has also made many contributions to the Leicester Overseas'
Who's Who section.
|
Olive & Eric: OliveandEric.com is
expat Keith Mason's wonderfully nostalgic website. He was originally from Leicester and now lives in
London. Olive and Eric were his parents and his website is dedicated to them as
a young English couple who, during the second world war were, like millions of
others, separated from each other. Olive was left at home in Leicester with three very young children and Eric was sent first to North
Africa and then to Italy. Through their letters to each other, you can share
the feeling of those times in a way which history books can never
convey.
|

Yes I know it's a bit obvious, but their Expats Bulletin
Board really did inspire me to start this website. The Mercury's website is called "This is Leicestershire," and
it's a must for all ex-pats. Find local and national news, sports, chat, as well as interesting articles and features.
Much more besides including "Friends of Leicestershire."
Leicester Overseas was the Mercury's "Site of the Week" for almost
three weeks in February.

~ Industrial
Heritage ~
|
|
This web site is dedicated to Matthew Townsend,
(1817-1879) who's ideas and inventions helped revolutionise the hosiery
Industry. Matthew was born 14th of February 1817, in the
village of Cropston, Leicestershire. His father was a Framework Knitter, one
of many at that time. This is the trade that Matthew would have learnt from a
very early age, probably as young as ten, the apprenticeship being the usual
seven years. By the age of twenty, he was living and working in the city of
Leicester, as a fancy hosier making such things as gloves, shawls and cravats.
He soon built up enough business and became a hosiery manufacturer, owning two
factories with a workforce of around 400.

|
~ Joseph
Carey Merrick ~
|
|
I
have just discovered this first class website about our own Leicester-born
hero Joseph Merrick "The Elephant Man." I
think the Leicester City Council should erect a statue to this man and should
stop ignoring him. As far as I am concerned, he is Leicester's most famous
son. Any statue could be tastefully done: showing him in his cape, oversized
hat and using the mask that he frequently wore to disguise his appearance.
The
following is a poem by Joseph:
Was I so
tall, could reach the pole, Or grasp the ocean with a span;
I
would be measured by the soul, The mind's the standard of the man."

Get
Paid to Surf and Work:
I
run this one the most, and it's now my favourite (I'm so fickle). The reason
is that you not only get paid for any time on the computer, you can actually
be away from it for up to half an hour at a time and still be paid. You do
have to log back in every 30 minutes though (a simple click suffices). Stable
and no trouble to run.
Desktop Dollars: pays a percentage of the total company advertising
revenues. The actual pay rate is estimated at $0.50 an hour for running a program
that shows you ads and your monthly surfing hours are unlimited.

Another pretty good one, and I run
this one fairly consistently as well. It only pays when you are both active at
the computer (not just surfing) and moving the mouse (at least every minute).
It doesn't work when you are doing a lot of straight typing however. You also
have to click on a number of ads, but not a great many. Good (instant) stats
available. Limitations: It's a bit big for my liking; however, this is the
beta version, so maybe they will make the final version thinner.
