Railway Postcards from Sheringham Station

Sheringham is the headquarters for the North Norfolk Railway, a five mile stretch of line on the former Midland & Great Northern (M&GN) Joint Railway that takes you from the coastal resort of Sheringham, via Weybourne, to the market town of Holt. The ten mile round trip will take you through fields of poppies and through delightful coastal countryside areas of North Norfolk designated as being of outstanding natural beauty.  At Sheringham there is a Visitor's Centre, Museum of Local Railways, a Museum Signal Box, a Souvenir Shop and a Railway Carriage Buffet. One of the train services offered is the "East Coast Pullman," a prestige dining train that features travel in Pullman carriages built in the 1930s and once forming part of the "Brighton Belle." Diners can relive the atmosphere of Pullman travel and luxury. Locals once dubbed the M&GN as the "Muddle and Get Knowhere," hardly applicable to this delightful little railway as it is today.

As I have indicated in "My Page" (link at bottom of page) Sheringham has a very special place in my memories of England and of the era of steam railways. In fact, as far as I am concerned, nostalgia about England and memories of the days of steam are synonymous experiences.  It is partly for this reason that I have included - in a section on Railway Post Cards - a brief plug for my boyhood "home from home" and my favourite Norfolk town.  I say it's only partly the reason because Sheringham station is where I actually purchased the post cards 23 years ago in 1977 during a visit to the UK from my home in Canada.

The following sets of suitably aged railway postcards show not only the development of the locomotive over the years, but also show the crests and names of many of the old, mostly forgotten railway companies that were around before the grouping into the "Big Four."  These thirty postcard images will be introduced onto this page a few at a time during the remainder of March.

Footnote: Sheringham is the headquarters for the North Norfolk Railway.
