Final Frame - "The body lay, naked, on a rough bed of fallen branches and fresh flowers. All around, on every low branch, stood tiny candles, their white stems gleaming in the flickering light." For over six months Detective Inspector Mike Croft's life has been dominated by one man, filmmaker and killer Jake Bowen, and the nationwide hunt for him codenamed 'Final Frame'. With three murders and a series of rapes to his name, and no consistent pattern to his deadly work, Bowen has quickly become the most feared man in Britain. Now his latest victim - art-student Julia Norman - has been found in a Dorset woodland, her body laid out in a macabre scene which chillingly recreates one of Julia's own self portraits. Mike's only leads are those people once close to Jake- his friend Max Harriman, now himself in prison, and his father Alastair Bowen, whose relationship with his son surely holds the key to this nightmare. But just as Mike begins to focus on Jake's background, so Jake decides it's time to turn his attention towards Mike - and those closest to him. Final Frame is the fourth in her DI-Mike Croft series. Takes the psychological suspense novel into new realms of mystery. Val McDermid. Fade to Grey - "There would be no more centrefolds of this little lady. Not unless you liked your meat well done" After two month's sick leave, Detective Inspector Mike Croft had hoped for a simple case to ease himself back into his job. But it is not to be, for a serial rapist is stalking the streets of Norwich, targeting young blonde women. At first it seems each attack is identical. But then the forensic reports come in - and Mike is faced with an even more horrifying scenario. Two hundred miles away in Avebury, a car is seen burning at the top of a hill. Inside is the body of a young blonde woman, identify unknown. As Detective Chief Inspector Charlie Morrow of the Wiltshire force leads his own investigation he has no reason to suspect a connection with the Norwich rapes. But there is a connection: the former actress Theo Howard, now living a quiet live in Norfolk. And for Theo, time is running out 'This is the art of the truly great suspense novel, an art which Adams has mastered' Crime Time 'Gripping, scary, a wonderful read. She could rise to the top of the genre' Yorkshire Evening Post.
The Greenway - Shortlisted for both the CWA John Creasey award and the
Author's Club Best First Novel Award. Few Debut novels achieve this level of suspense. Written stylishly and with insight The Greenway lingered in my mind for days. It takes the psychological suspense novel into new realms of mystery. Val McDermid. A Haunting debut. Minette Walters. Bird - "I knew you'd come Bird." Marcie smiled again and patted the old man's hand. It was the third time he had said those words in the half-hour she had been sitting beside him. Jack Witney is dying and his beloved grand-daughter Marcie, his `Bird' who he raised and who once idolised him, has come to his bedside to forgive him the past. From Jack's ramblings as he slips in and out of consciousness, it becomes clear that he cannot achieve the peace in death that he craves - worse than what caused him to alienate Marcie, some terrible vision is hounding him to his grave. A woman, he insists, is constantly there standing over him. A woman with a noose around her neck. Despite bitter opposition from her grandmother, Marcie seeks to uncover the secrets of her Grandfather's, and consequently her, past lowly the story of Jack's life unravels itself and Marcie becomes terrifyingly sucked in as she wakes from a nightmare one night to find deeply bitten rope marks around her throat..... Bird is set in and around the Lincolnshire Wolds, giving a remarkable sense of place that reflects the gloriously spooky and atmospheric tone of the book. Jane Adams' first two novels of psychological suspense promised a major talent in the making. With Bird, she amply fulfils that promise with assurance and style. Convincing, unnerving and profoundly disturbing. Val McDermid, Manchester Evening News. Cast the First Stone - Ellie Masouk never knew who cast the first stone, but suddenly and inexplicably life descended into madness . . . It had all begun when Eric Pearson and his family had moved into the imposing house at the end of Ellie's quiet cul-de-sac. Within just a few short weeks they had become the focus of local hatred. What have the Pearsons done to provoke such hostility, expressed through threatening phone calls, smashed windows and violent intimidation? And why does Eric Pearson take daily photographs of everyone on the close? Detective Inspector Mike Croft, reviewing the case of a convicted child abuser as it heads for appeal, is also very aware of the Pearsons. For Eric claims he has the journal of the late Simon Blake JP, which exposes some evil, far-reaching crimes. And, he insists, he and his family are being intimidated to stop him presenting his evidence. At first it seems Pearson's claims are simply the work of a bitter man - a man hiding his own disturbing secret. . . But then a terrible discovery is made on the outskirts of Bright's Wood . . . A quiet, touching work of great impact...Adams's debut last year,
The Greenway hinted at a promising crime-writing talent; Cast the First
Stone amply confirms that view. Marcel Berlins, The Times. Gripping, scary, a wonderful read. She could rise to the top of the
genre... Yorkshire Evening Post. Ordinary it certainly is not.. Jane Adams will keep you on the edge
of your seat from the first few pages until the chilling climax. Stirling
Observer Adams's story is described with a low key discretion and
deliberate lack of sensationalism that make it all the more
haunting...grippingly edgy. Sunday Times. |
